Should I get a DSP?

I have a 2021 non-JBL setup, factory headunit, JLaudio RD900/5 amp with 3-way focals in front, 2 way focals rear and 2 10" JLAudio subs in rear.

It sounds amazing but occasionally when turned up some songs sound washed out (cant think of any other way to describe it)

I notice on 12volt website (which is where I bought my stuff) James says a DSP is required for a JBL setup but not for non-JBL... why?

Can I just adjust my amp "better"? Should I swap for a VX1000/5i which comes with a DSP?

or just get a stand alone DSP?

    thanks in advance!

Too many mods to list right now for both Tundra
Upgrade your headunit first. It’ll make everything sound better with more controls and sound adjustment with time delay correction. DSP will also help but the head unit upgrade will be better.
