    Hello All,
Should I buy my first Tundra? And is it a good price for a 2nd generation?
    Details:
    2008 Limited 4WD Crewmax 60k miles
    5.7 liter V8 6speed automatic
Garaged and no rust or paint fade
Regular maintenance log (some records of maintenance and upgrades)
    Price is $23k

I'm going to look at it tomorrow with the intention of buying it if it checks out. I was seriously considering an Army Green 2021 but this one seems really nice, checks all my boxes of options I want and would save quite a bit on the pocketbook.

    Pros:
    Low miles
    Clean truck
    Maintenance log
    All options I want
    Price
Allows to get a nice truck without going all out and wait to see the new 2022 Tundra and then possibly upgrade.

    Cons:
    Older truck
    Used vehicle
    Secondary air induction pump concerns
    Price
Missing out on the 2021 most refined 3rd gen last of the proven V8 platform.

There may be more pros or cons you all can add.

So what do you say, should purchase this 2008 as my first Tundra at $23k and if that's a good price or pay $46k for the 2021?

As a happy 08 owner I say buy it. You can address any issues you may have and still be $$ ahead.

I had an '08 CM. Good truck. The best part about it is the reclining rear seat. The new ones don't have it. Never understood why Toyota got rid of that?:notsure:

Just curious, if you're interested in getting the 2022 redesign or possibly the last model of the 3rd gen, what's your reasoning for wanting to get this truck so close to that if you would possibly buy a 2022 or 2021? Do you need a truck right now or can you wait? and also if you dont end up liking the 2022, you'll be able to get the last gen year 2021 with good financing options. just my opinion.

You get the same truck with less electronic headaches and you're not making a mortgage payment each month on a new one. I love my 2009. Seems like a good price for such a low mileage truck. Go for it.

i prefer the bottom half of seat folding up instead of the seat reclining. more room to put stuff.

If you are financing, probably tough to get a decent rate on something that old, even worse if from an individual. If it works for you, go for it though. There isnt really alot of difference in the truck itself other than creature comforts. I just upgraded from an 08 Ford with no screen, nav, bluetooth (except I had the plug in transmitter thingy)...etc., I can take em or leave em though.

Use a credit union. They are more willing to finance older vehicles. I financed mine with a Older Car Finance rate of 6.5%. Not great but when you are financing half the cost or less of a new truck, you can double down on payments when you can and get it paid off much quicker than a $48,000 loan.

I just did something similar ('10 Tundra Rock Warrior 54K miles). I really want a 2021 TRD Pro, but I bought this one outright, so no payment. I put a few bucks into suspension and infotainment and have something pretty great for a fraction of the cost of the new one.

Also, the SAIS issues are easily resolved with a second generation ~$400 Hewitt Tech kit. I have one in garage that I saved from my last Land Cruiser, so I'm covered, if that happens.

Besides, with a 2nd gen as your first Tundra, you'll learn a lot about what you like and don't like before you dump $55K on one. You should be able to get most of your money out of it if you decide to trade or sell to upgrade later.

I went through a credit union and got 4% financing on a 2008 Limited. The price seems fair. Maybe a little high relative to when I was shopping, but I bet it'll come in fairly close to KBB. If it were me, I'd buy the 2008.

I went through our credit union when I bought my '10 SR5 CrewMax with 215k miles back in July. I paid $13k out the door. The credit union had it valued at $14k give or take. The rate was higher due to the year and mileage. Our credit union doesn't have a mileage limitation and will go back 20 year models on an auto loan.

I would look at a used truck regardless so that you don't take the hit driving a new one off the lot. My '10 drives just like I would expect a new one to drive.

I know Tundras hold their value, but irrespective of the market, $23k for a 12 year old truck seems like a lot of money. My vote is for a new truck. Wait 3-4 years for Toyota to work out any next gen issues and have a nicer trade in if you decide the '22+ model is what you want. If it isn't, you'll be happy you bought a newer truck that has a long life ahead of it.

What do you think is a fair price for a garage kept 12 year old 60k miles 4WD Limited crewmax?

I think I'd love the 2021 just don't know if it's worth double the price for the one I want.

I think I'd feel the 2008 more dated if the 2021 was the spied redesigned Tundra twin turbo 400+ hp model we keep hearing about. Since the 2021 is not it's kinda hard for me to say another 23k gets me much more truck.

The market determines fair price, not me. If it's a great truck, go for it. I'm the kind of person that will take a car payment and the warranty over no payment and a vehicle that might not start tomorrow. But I don't trust used vehicles, or more specifically their previous owners.

I don't know your situation nor your financial status. We all know if any older truck on the market can go many years w/o issue, it needs to be a Toyota. But five years from now if you don't like the new body style, do you want to sitting on a nice '08 or a nicer '21? Just playing the devil's advocate here.

I don’t think the price is all that far off. Maybe a couple thousand high, but make an offer. It might not be unreasonable given the high demand the market is seeing.

Have a mechanic check it out. It’s worth $100 to do so.

At the end of the day, you have to evaluate your finances and decide what’s worth it. There is no way I could justify the new truck, but that does not necessarily hold true for you.

Look at your driving habits and how long you intend to keep it, then make your decisions from there. If you put 12k miles on in a year, in five years your truck will only have 120k on it. You’ll sell it easily and do well on the asking price. Or, you can drive it for ten more. Whatever floats your boat.

The price sounds a little high, but I don’t know supply in your area. If the average truck is rusted out in your area, then that will explain the value.

I definitely think you should buy used instead of new if you think you may want the next gen.

I like all the replies. You all are making me think!

I did some shopping for about a month or two and found a similar clean low mileage CM 2nd gen in texas but priced at $26k. Of course the new ones are easy to find.

I think the price is about $1500 high even though it's within the KBB private party range as is. I also think another clean one will pop up but may be awhile and who knows where it'll be?

I just hope this one checks out and is clean, if not I'll hard pass.

Is there a buying used Tundra checklist or items to look for when I check it out tomorrow?

@ZiaTundra IMO...cam tower leak, and front diff needle bearing noise. Plenty of threads with info about all these items.

Not deal breakers but good negotiation points.

It may sound a little high priced but since it's a one owner, low mileage, well maintained it may be worth the extra money. It's not everyday you find an older model in that like new condition. I say go check it out and test drive it, and of course try to negotiate. And if everything checks out great...go for it! Good luck

The price sounds a little high to me but prices are not coming down at the moment. Not knowing where you live it's a little hard to say for certain though. If down south and rust isn't as much of an issue then I would think you could find a '12 for that kind of money. But some places in the south 4wd isn't as popular which does push up the price. 2 years ago I paid $12k for an '07 SR5 with 150k (lesser trim level but with 4wd and the 5.7) in South Carolina. It took me a couple weeks to find a true southern truck. But not a spec of rust on it, not on the frame, the body, or even the bolts. For the amount you are talking about I would expect things like the rear axle to not have any rust on them. But again, thanks to the virus prices are very funky.

Get the deal you wanted? Was it an old guy who pulled his boat from his house to the fishing lake a couple times a week?
