I just got a used '17 Tundra. I didn't really want 4wd but it came with it. I've never had 4wd before and don't plan to do much off-road, but I'd like to take advantage of it in adverse road conditions. Should I always be parked to go into 4wd high or low, or can I be moving? If so, what would be the max recommended speeds?

    Thanks from a newbie.

Look at your drivers sun visor..all the 4WD info should be there.

4wd hi you have to be below 60mph, or you might break something or the truck will downshift hard because you didn’t follow instructions. 4low you have to stop, put it in neutral then switch. As far as I know you can go as fast as you want in 4hi, 4lo you can feel it, it won’t go any faster past a certain limit I believe it’s 15mph, only for maximum traction situations where you need all the torque that’s why 4lo is slow speeds.

If it's anything like the nissans. 4lo had a less sensitive throttle also. So less spinning when you give gas

    Yep, a slow tank:rofl:

Also if your in a slippery condition, you don't want to be spinning the wheels. You could experience a loud CLUNK. Loud clunks can be expensive $ when in doubt, come to a complete stop. Shift into 4hi and slowly pull away. You will feel and see the light in the dash. And please don't be that person that thinks 4x4 are like driving on a dry road. You may be able to take off, but stopping is not much improved. We are smarter here;)

One thing I noticed when in 4WD with my 2015 SR5 is that the 4HI would flash even when I put it back to 2WD.
At first it took slowing down to almost a crawl or a dead stop to get 4HI to stop flashing and go back to 2WD.
What ALSO works is gently pushing down on the accelerator to increase the speed slightly. THIS also helps 4HI go to 2WD and not cause it to hang up in 4WD and not go back into 2WD! Give it a try!

Also no 4WD on dry roads, as it stresses the system!
I plow a lot snow here in Maine and the only time I use 4 lo is after I get stuck.

I will run mine in 4WD on dry roads but ONLY on a straight, several-mile stretch of country roads and then only about once or twice a month merely to keep the transfer case lubricated.
    Anyone else?

I use 4H for my driveway so I don’t tear it up in 2. 4L for the occasional knucklehead I’ve dragged out of ditches this winter...oh, and when I pulled the boat out of the back yard before the ground “melted”. Gotta love Maine
