Settle for short box or keep waiting?

We’ve waited since last December for an allocation for a 1794, long box. The dealer has no idea when we might get such an allocation. However. today, he called to say they have a 1794 short box that arrived yesterday and the purchaser backed out. It’s a hybrid where our original request was for non-hybrid. The long box will accommodate our bicycles inside with the tailgate closed but a short box won’t. For long trips, I’d prefer to be able to close it. The extra foot of length isn’t too important otherwise.
It would be really nice to have a pickup now rather than whenever - likely January or later. Waiting means it will be a 2023. The price increase for a non-hybrid 2023 vs the extra cost for this hybrid 2022 is almost a wash. We could buy today and keep our “order” for the long box. We would then possibly sell the short box when the long box comes in.
Does anyone have information about resale of 2022 Tundras in Ontario, Canada? There is only 1 used one listed now that I can find so not much to go on.
    Any other thoughts?

Do it. I don't think you will loose anything selling it later.
    I would go for it.

You will end up paying sales tax twice on the truck, registration fees, etc. What's a sales tax on a 70k truck? A lot...

I just picked up my 1794 last week, short bed. I had ram 1500, double cab, 6.5ft bed, and it was nice. But I can't get crew cab 6.5ft bed as I'm in the city and parking would be much harder, and it won't even fit onto my driveway... So I had to get short bed.

My advice to you: if parking is not an issue, get long bed!

Don't buy short bed as you'll end up wasting money buying and selling trucks...

Hit up several dealers, I was monitoring 100 dealers throughout all California. Don't just wait for your one local dealer.

In Ontario, we only pay sales tax on the difference in value between the trade and the new vehicle if you do both ends at a dealer. If you sell privately, you pay the full tax on both purchases. Something to consider for sure.
Parking would seldom be an issue.
    Thanks for the feedback.

Just meant it's different. Taxing different, out of province it's more complicated than out of state, etc.
But for start there's no inventory. At all.
That's why I said I believe it wouldn't cost you extra getting the short box now and trading it for a long one later.

I fit my bike in my 5.5'. I mean it's in at an angle, but it fits.. DO IT. I feel like my truck with the short bed is looooong. Don't know what I'd do with another 12"+ in the back!

We had a F450 with double cab, 8’ box and duallies. That wasn’t hard to park, as long as we found 4 adjoining spots! Yes, the added length of a Tundra long box would be harder to park but should seldom be an issue.

You said you would SELL the short box back to the dealer. That does not save you any sales tax. You pay full tax on both new trucks. Maybe you meant trade it on the new truck

That’s how I see it. Once we realized that my Tundra was not the best purchase for our lifestyle my wife suggested two things:

    1) No Dodges
    2) Get exactly what I wanted.

I took here advice (I still wanted a Ram 3500 since I’m a glutton for punishment) and purchased exactly what I wanted.

Six years later I have no want or need for something different. Very content with the purchase.

Doesn't seem like the market / shortages will be changing anytime soon. I think the idea of taking the short bed and keeping the current order in is the way to go. Unless something crazy happens, you will probably make money on the trade.

I waited from November 21' until September 22' on a 6.5' bed with rear air suspension. I'm glad I waited.

I ordered my truck in Dec 2021, and took delivery July 2022. No issue with parking or turning radius. I just have to park a little further from the front doors of the stores, and the the added bonus of no door dings and racing stripes left from unattended shopping carts.

South Carolina caps sales tax at $500. It’s great.

Good to know people are getting trucks with long boxes. That’s what we need to hear.
Our tax is 13% with no cap. Ouch.
A little exercise is a good thing!

Yes we likely will. We are leaning toward getting this and trading it for the longer box model when it comes in.

There are currently 3 or 4 used 2022 Tundras for sale across Canada through dealers. All of their listed prices are higher than list price for new of the same model. They have between 300 and 14000 km. Looking good.

My Canada experience, emailed 7-10 AB/sask/mb dealers every week and said I wanted a truck within a month and call me if they had that otherwise don't call. I typically had one call back and said they had something coming within a couple weeks. Dealers already have deposits on people waiting and even if something frees up and its a 'match' on the waitlist, they seem to be more inclined to sell to someone not on waitlist, because they consider those sales already done. Its greasy, it sucks, but thats the way Toyota Canada has set it up with Canadian dealers maintaining what amounts to their own wish lists. Nothing stopping them from moving you up/down the list whenever the feel like it, you have no clue.

My suggestion is to call the local dealers every week. Sometimes you get the evening online chat salesperson who wants to steal a deal from his coworker. Note that out of province dealers will say they can't lease to you as per Toyota Canada rules, but will gladly finance or sell outright. Toyota Canada frowns on dealers aka 'not allowed' if they are working on a deal with you and you already have a deposit with another dealer, keep that in mind.

and wait for the 6.5, that 1 foot changed my life (thats what she said). Will never go back to a 5.5 box and I've had a few. Or like you said, just intend on trading it in, with current prices you can still come out even or ahead, just who knows when that will drop

Once you own that hybrid, you'll be sorely disappointed switching to the non-hybrid.

I would say wait to get what you want unless you can’t get by with what you have.

Exactly! (I am well aware as I used to sell new cars) Most states are that way. The OP stated he would SELL the short bed back to the dealer, in which case he would pay sales tax again. He probably meant trade it on the long bed

Not sure if you can get the larger fuel tank in the shortbed but that was a big deal for me. I'd wait, in the end it might be another month or two but you'll have the truck you originally wanted and be happier down the road.
