Let me start by saying that this has happened 2 times now and the dealership can’t duplicate the issue.

1st time this happened it was raining hard. I was leaving a parking lot and when I pulled out on to the road the sensors up front detected something and the truck had a big flashing orange/red “brake” pop up in dash, the brakes applied themselves and the accelerator went limp. This caused me to come to a screeching halt in the middle of the road. Scared the hell out me but no one was hurt and there wasn’t any oncoming traffic.

2nd time this happened it had also just rained. I was entering a roundabout that was totally empty. I had a car behind me. As I entered the roundabout my truck did the same thing detecting something in front and slammed on the brakes while also cutting power to the accelerator. I came to a screeching halt and the car behind me luckily swerved up on the the circle and missed hitting me. Scared the hell out of my son and I.

I don’t know what the heck is going on with these trucks. I have had a long list of issues and this is just the newest problem. I rely on my truck as a fly fishing guide to get me and my clients to and from the river on a daily basis. I don’t have time to keep taking it back and forth to the dealership where they “can’t duplicate the problem”. My other problems may land me stranded on the side of the road but this could hurt or kill someone. It’s been documented by Toyota dealership but labeled could not duplicate.

Has anyone else had a malfunction of this nature? It seems that a common denominator was it was wet out both times. I can’t imagine having this happen going at a high rate of speed.

Water can creep into connections and or sensors that might have a manufacturing defect, loose connection, etc...increasing or reducing resistance resulting in a "ghost in the machine". Sucks but all wiring connectors and sensors involved in the safety system need to be checked, probably disconnected, cleaned, have silicone grease applied and reconnected...let us know what they find.

I just leave the Pre Collision Sensor permanently off, so I don't have to deal with it.

Happened to me yesterday. Was hauling a load of wood (in tow haul/mode if that matters). Not sure if I was creeping forward when the brakes hit and it knocked my foot off the brake pedal, or my foot slipped off the brake pedal and then I got the emergency brake…but it definitely happened…this is the view that it braked me on.

Jettster, I did take it in for them to go over things for 2 hours. I wanted to specifically see what they did but wasn’t allowed. The end result was “could not duplicate the problem”. Which I would have assume be the case since they didn’t drive it. It just there in the shop. Matt2015tundra I too would just leave it off except that kind of defeats the purpose of buying a $60k truck that has the features. We pay for these features to work. I am tired of letting these companies just get away with having things not work properly and just having to deal with it. I have a gas gauge and a gas tank that don’t work correctly as well and I am sick of it. Truck isn’t reliable and reliability is what I paid for.
Gillfavor, I would have deemed that acceptable just from there being a van in front of you. When I left the parking lot the one time and entered the roundabout the other time there was literally nothing in front of me. No cars had passed me, nothing in front of me, just empty road.

I guess it's all about your expectations. I got by just fine without all the nanny features for 45 years of driving, so I really don't need them now. If anything the nanny features are more of a distraction than anything, IMO. I leave the PCS and parking assist off all the time. And I shut the stupid stop/start feature off every time I start the truck.

Matt. I whole heartedly agree with you that the extra “nanny” features as you call them are more of a pain in the ass than they are worth. I don’t use or rely on them. I was also under the impression I had them turned off honestly since I had turned them off previously. That said the point is we all paid a pretty penny for our Tundras and they should work. What happened to me is potential for a real problem. Someone including myself or my family could be hurt. Sitting at the dealership watching them throw it on a rack for 2 hours and then telling me they can’t duplicate the problem is not even close to an attempt to figure out what happened. Toyota has really dropped the ball in my opinion with these vehicles.
