Secured Bike Storage

Hey guys,

Considering buying a Tundra, probably 3rd gen, but wanted to know how all of you lock up your bike (mountain bike for me)? I would like to keep my bike locked away out of sight, either in the bed -- maybe beneath a tonneaue cover? -- or I suppose even in the Cab, but am interested in what options are out there. This would be to keep in the truck while I am at work, and would be in a "key access only" parking garage. I understand that any option out there is just a deterrent and doesn't guarantee safety, and also have the bike on my insurance policy, but would like to take reasonable measures to deter theft.

Today I have a Camry, and I take off both the tires and put them in to my trunk, then put the frame in the back seat. It's...not ideal, but it is more secure than the bike racks outside my office.

For the record, I have a nice One Up rack and also will buy a tailgate pad, but this is specifically for the scenario where I am going in to work and bring my bike with me to ride it afterwards.

 

I think under the tonneau, you'd still be removing wheels. At least the front anyway. With a shell is probably the easiest way.
The 3rd gen has a shallow bed depth as well.

 

Does it make sense to rent a small storage unit near where you ride? I have had both a window smashed and a bed cover slashed on different vehicles. They got valuables when the window was smashed, but there wasn't anything under the bed cover. Insurance deductibles can be terrible. I have zero on comprehensive now and the premium is only a small amount higher than it would be with a $1000 deductible. All of that said, enjoy the biking! However, know that too much can leave you with roasted hips and knees as you age. Seen it happen to a family member who did like 40 miles daily. Good luck!

 

That is the main reason I bought a shell and then made a removable fork mount board. Can handle my fat bike, quick release MTB or a road bike.

 

Bed cap/topper, bike lock through a d-ring in the bed and a front dropout mount is what I have done for years.
