Has anyone installed a secondary transmission cooler on a 2016 SR-5 4x4 Tundra with tow package. I have the OEM cooler that is present but wanted to add a secondary to maintain proper temperature. Comments, suggestions, recommendation from the forum would be very helpful ! TY & Aloha!

I added one to my 2010. Mounted it in front of the sc radiator which was in front of the other radiator/condenser. I put a magnafine inline filter in it too. Just bolt it up and hook up the hoses from and to the other atf cooler. It was easier on the 2010 because the grill raised with the hood.

Start by defining your design objective. Reduced transmission fluid temperature?...That's too vague. Define what ATF temperature will be acceptable to you under your worst operating conditions. What fluid temperatures are you now seeing under those conditions?

I know that on my 2018 with tow package that pinning open the thermostat lowers my temperatures so that towing my loaded dump trailer weighing a little over 10k does not get over 185, so why the need for auxiliary cooler? Are earlier models running hotter?

There is a forum member that is maybe making a kit?

I’ve seen this installed on a few different Toyota’s locally.

TY for the info & links , I 've had high temp reading of above 220 deg. twice on the soft sand beach trails on H4 and once with warning lights on dash.

220 isn’t too high if you are off roading, going slow, and pushing your truck hard. The light coming on is a concern. My 2010 atf overheat light came on around 255 and the 2019+ are at 302, so a 2016 would be somewhere between there.

Check your fan. Put a piece of paper in front of the radiator and the fan should hold it to the radiator. If the paper falls, your fan isn’t spinning correctly.

How many miles do you have? Maybe time to change the atf. I think Toyota recommends changing at 60k if you drive hard. If you do change it, keep a sample and get it tested.
