Greetings all. I've joined these forums because I'm on the hunt for my first Tundra. I'm looking for a 4WD regular cab, long bed. I'd prefer a First Gen if I can find one in good shape, mostly because of the shorter total length and wheelbase. I'm planning to put a cap on it and build out the interior as a camper. I'm fairly tall (6'3") so the long bed is intended to allow me to stretch out comfortably inside.

Any leads are much appreciated, and I'm looking forward to learning from ya'll!

Welcome and greetings from Minnesota. You may have more leg room to operate the truck if you widened your search to include a gen 2 or 2.5 double cab. You still get a 6’ 6” box. Something to consider. Good luck.

RoadtripJim: Yeah, I've tried out a 6'6" bed and it's just a little too tight for me. There are enough RCLBs out there to choose among (I'm looking nationwide), so it's just going to come down to whether I hold out for just the right 1st Gen or settle for the extra bulk of a 2nd.

Cruzer and Jim LE: Thanks for the link. As 2nd Gens go, that one looks like a solid option. Right now I've got my eyes on a low mileage 2000, but I'm not in a big rush so tempted to hold out for an '03-'04 (for the stronger brakes and transmission) or better yet, an '05-'06 (VVT-i and 5-speed).

Jumping back in here to say that in retrospect I may have missed the boat on that 2nd Gen shared by @Jim LE 1301 and @Cruzer last month. I've checked out every promising lead I've found since, and in almost every case I've decided to pass because of the extent of rust. So I'm still searching for a reasonably clean RCLB, but I'm now very much open to 2nd Gens as well as 1st. After all, in exchange for the additional bulk, I'd get an extra 4" of height under the cap on my bed, substantially more storage space behind the cab seats, a timing chain, more aftermarket support, and the possibility of a 38 gal fuel tank, right?

If anyone's sitting on a truck that might fit the bill, I'm willing to pay whatever's on the high side of fair up to about $25k or so.

While I can’t offer my truck for sale, I wish you the best of luck. The first gens ain’t easy to find. And the 2nd gens aren’t any easier

Staring to wonder about the wisdom of this RCLB Tundra search. Toyota stopped making these things in 2017, so the pool of available trucks in good shape has been dwindling for years, and from what I can tell around here, current owners are pretty darn reluctant to part with theirs, especially given that they couldn't get a new one if they wanted. I'm on the verge of shifting my focus to F-150s... given how ubiquitous they are, I suspect I'm significantly more likely to find one that's relatively rust free and been well taken care of, which might more than balance out the otherwise superior reliability I'd expect from the Toyota. Anyone wanna talk me out of it?

Thanks for taking the time to dig these up Cruzer! Have seen most of 'em, but not all. I don't tend to check pickuptrucks.com often because it's a frustratingly limited interface (can't search nationwide or filter by drivetrain, among other things).

I'm able to search nationwide, just select "All Miles" from your zipcode:
    upload_2022-11-3_10-11-33.png

Once it shows the results filter Body Style = regular cab
Sure you have to click on the truck to see if it's 4wd but if you're regularly searching for a RC, like me, then you'll quickly learn which ones you've already seen. I've found plenty of clean RCLBs on pickuptruck.com - just don't have the funds to pull the trigger yet.

Somehow I missed that option, thanks again Cruzer.

The mileage on that 2015 is so low it has me wondering whether it's been sitting around undriven for too long, but regardless, it's out of my price range. A couple of the others turned out to be too rusty for my liking on closer inspection, but I'm admittedly being particularly picky about that.

Best of luck with your search too.

Thanks Catus. Yeah, that one's been up for sale for months. Seems like I'm not the only one that's wary of trucks that've been used as snow plows.

I've narrowed my search to second gens now (mostly for the space behind the cab seats and extra bed depth), but that looks like a gem of a first gen!
