Guess I need to toss my plastic housing instead of using it as a backup

I like this guy, he might even convince me to buy an OEM plastic housing and swap back.

Yeah, but if you run the oil tests and it says it’s good, I wouldn’t think that one part is going to cause your engine to fail. What’s next you can’t add a high output alternator or swap to LEDs?

So... definitely do NOT remove the center pipe from the plastic housing?

I actually have the dorman!

The first oil change I did when I bought my car was missing the middle pipe so I went to Autozone and bought the dorman kit for the middle pipe. Have been fine for the 45k miles I have put on the car so far.

According to the video. Many have done it without issue.

Toyota videos will never condone or encourage using other aftermarket parts or even swapping non vehicle specific Toyota parts. 8/10 tundras on here have added the driver side grab handle, which I assume a Toyota tech would also advise again. And before some says "that's different, it's cosmetic". Yes, but a cosmetic.accrssory that can do lethal damage and you are messing around near the air bag, is a higher overall risk vs doing some financial damage to an engine.

Most people will be able to make the switch carefully and properly with the housing into the new aluminum or.metsl cap, not everyone. I would like to think, most of us would not make the switch if we damaged the metal insert upon removal.

It was an interesting video though, with a lot of good info into scaring hacks from attempting to mess around with it.

Sounds like he advises against swapping to the metal but only because of the metal pipe in the middle. I did mine very delicately and don't plan on doing it again unless it comes loose. I didn't factor in the pressure of the bypass valve though and thinking back on it, I think I swapped in my old spring as well so mine should be working identically as the plastic one did.
