Hi folks! Newbie here! I have an interesting issue. I have a 2015 Gen3 Double Cab 5.7. About two weeks ago I developed a slight rumble (I feel in mu butt) in what I think is one of my tires. I only noticed it at about 45mph. Just a slight shimmy, but enough to irritate me. Took it to my local Toyota dealer (not going to mention the name) After a lengthy diagnosis they felt it was an out of balance tire. So they checked the cv joints, driveshaft, bearings, etc and said that it was a tire out of balance. (Mastercraft) So I drove it off the lot and it was now happening at 25 and 45mph.

So I made another appointment for the following day and they wend through everything all over again and they still could not fix the rumble. They thought it was a defect in one of the back tires. So they did nothing to fix the problem. So these Mastercraft tires have about 60% tread left on them and I really don't want to replace them to the tune of $500 plus.

My question is, has anyone had the same issue I am experiencing? How did you solve it?

Thanks for any input in advance

    Spence

If it's an out of balance tire (sounds a bit like that to me), have a tire shop take a look and see if they can get it to balance out. I don't have any experience with those particular tires, but I have had a weight fall off before and cause a similar "feeling" that was quickly solved by the tire shop. I mean, if the dealer is saying they thing it's an out-of-balance tire, are they not making any attempt to actually balance it (or do they not do tires there)?

The dealer said that they re-balanced all 4 tires and when they did, I got a new rumble at 25 mph

Hmm... wonder how the tread wear is looking. Uneven, or any dishing/cupping in the individual lugs on any one of them? I had a set of GY Duratracs that I fought for the entire 60k miles that I had them on the truck. The first set I had on my '08 were awesome...got 80k out of them and they were great in any weather condition (except that after about 50k they would slip a bit on wet pavement when starting off from a stop - but that may have just been because of how I drive). The second set were miserable - hard to keep balanced, the tread wore uneven and had me re-checking alignment several times, they couldn't grip wet pavement from day one. But I was too cheap to swap them out while they still had useable tread.

Looking back, I should have just taken them back and gotten something else. I ended up replacing them with a set of 2015 TRD take-off rims/tires (so the same Michelins that come from the factory) for less than the cost of a new set of tires alone, so I used them for 55k and then moved on to some BFG KO2's.

Tires look fine, no visable cups or uneven wearing.

Did you rotate the tires and see if it persists? Front to back. Left rear to right front. Left front to right front. Anything to isolate the wheel/tire combo as the exclusive culprit?

This may sound like a long shot, but I had my wife's can in the shop multiple times and to multiple shops. I had a shimmy that drove me nuts and I couldn't track it down. Finally a tire shop noticed that we had two bent rims. I had to buy new rims, but it fixed the problem.

If nothing else becomes obvious, try having a Road Force balance done. This is a more advanced balancing procedure that they will actually rotate the tire on the rim to an optimal position.

Ok after two days, I finally heard back from the dealer. As I suspected it was the differential. I'm glad that I purchased certified pre-owned because it will be covered under Toyota warranty. Apparently it takes a few days to get a new differential in stock but by the end of next week, it sholud be finished. Anyone else have a differential go after 48,000 miles? Weird.

Ok final update: The dealer replaced the differential and the problem persisted. Went back into the shop and they replaced the drive shaft. If it was me I would have started with the tires and the driveshaft. I bought the truck last May and from the information I can glean, the truck was traded in December of 2019 and sat on the lot until I bought it in May of 2020. My brother has a theory that the driveshaft started to rust on the bottom and threw it out of balance. Interesting since I did not notice it till late November. Anyway, the rumble is gone, absolutely smooth as silk. Thanks for everyone's input.
