RTT mounted directly to tonneau cover (without rack)?

    Hi all,

Are there any tonneau covers out there that you can mount a RTT directly on, without the use of a separate rack?

I know there are "tonneau compatible" racks, but I'm not looking for a rack that's on the truck full time. I only camp periodically, so it would be nice to have a tonneau cover that stays on all the time, and then I could simply mount the RTT to the tonneau cover when I go out for a trip. It would also make the installation of the RTT much easier, as the mounting point would be roughly the height of the bed of the truck.

    Thanks.

No. Even shells on trucks need additional reinforcement and a rack. The dynamic load of a RTT needs more support than a cover can provide.

Ok, thanks for the info. Wasn't sure if someone had come up with a super durable option with built in rails for mounting.

You might look at the Diamondback cover. That's the closest, but still has to have bars to mount it.

I'll be sure to check that out. Thanks Adam.

You could definitely mount a tent to a diamondback, no problem

Still requires a rack/bars, though. Perhaps I misunderstood OP's question, as I thought the plan was to flush mount.

You might need to mount a couple small shims under the RTT (unistrut or something) but you could totally thru-bolt a RTT to a diamondback. Whether or not you want to drill holes in a brand new diamondback is a different question. If you don’t want to do that then you’ll need a rack as you mentioned

Yes, ideally I'd like it to be flush mount, but this Diamondback option is pretty solid. I'm just not super sold on the two options that would work with the rack system (only the HD and SE models). I would prefer the Switchback trifold option, as it seems much easier to utilize bed space, but the rack system won't work on the Switchback.

Elevate T-Slot Rails/Racks are pretty quick and easy to take on/off.

8 nuts in total, maybe 5 minutes w/cordless and racks are off. I take mine off when I go to the carwash. Low/Med/High settings, but you can't open a Tri-Fold tonneau on the low.

Diamondback might be the only one that's strong enough to go directly on it, but then you can't open it with a RTT on there can you?

That looks really nice. My truck already has the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 cover on it. Maybe I just keep my current cover, go this route for the rack, and remove it when not in use. I appreciate the help.

My pleasure! Hit me up if you have any questions.

I'm really happy with the setup so far. It was surprising to me how few options there are available to run racks with a trifold tonneau.

For sure, and sounds good! I was having that same issue. Thanks again!
