    Hey guys,
I have a ‘16 Tundra xspx crewmax with just under 28k miles. Every now and again (a few times every two weeks or so) when i start up my truck I hear a rattling sound coming from about where the rear doors are located but I can hear the rattle coming out of both exhaust pipes....?
It sounds like basically a rock or a few pebbles are dancing around in my exhaust system and it goes away. So, it only sounds during idle rpms or no higher than 2nd gear as I’ve heard it only a few times while braking but I’ve only heard this rattle maybe three times as I come to a stop, I don’t think it has anything to do with my brakes as they have checked out fine at every tune up.
I thought it may have been bad gas, but I’ve treated the fuel lines and well the gas tank is still practically “new,” and the dealership has cleaned it as well. I have not yet mentioned it to my dealer bc it started just about a month or two ago.
Reading above, it wouldn’t surprise me if I have a loose bolt somewhere that rattles mostly upon ignition and resting, and it always goes away. Any other ideas as my truck is still warranted til 36k miles? Just envision starting your truck and it sounding like a few small pebbles or maybe just one pebble is in your exhaust pipe, that’s what the sound is like. The truck runs great but being it’s fairly new and I’ve taken great care of it, I’d like to get this resolved. I’m not mechanically inclined, so if I can get some feedback to tell the dealership for them to start with I’d be greatful.

    Thanks,
    Josh M

Welcome from CO. Are you sure it’s not vibrations from a heat shield?

And the majority of the time it’s upon ignition and lasts for maybe a minute sometimes just a few seconds and it goes away!

Welcome Josh. You could be right about a loose bolt. I think @T-Rex266 has a great suggestion with the heat shield too. Since it's under warranty I'd take it in and let the dealer.....deal with it.

I will try and upload it on YouTube. I just didn’t think of the heat shield or covers being the truck is a 2016 but 28,000 miles is long enough that I’m sure some parts can get loose. I would put money on the shield covers or just a loose bolt.
No loss of torque or performance regarding the actual durability of the engine or power, and the transmission is as smooth as the day I drove it off the lot as far as gear changing!

I had a rattle the other day and it turned out to be the skid plate. But I have aftermarket skids.

Sounds like a loose hanger or heat shield. You need to get under the truck and not near the tips where its not emitting from.

Thanks buddy, I took the video the first time I heard it. It hasn’t sounded that persistent really since or at least for more than 10-15 seconds. I will definitely mention this to the dealership. I really appreciate it!
