I need to install a single roof rack with crossbar using either a short track that goes in the ditch, or a fixed-point base. Either way, I am worried about where it's safe to drill -- don't want to mess with the sunroof or damage any electrical components.

Does Toyota or anyone else have a diagram that shows the no-go areas in the roof of an '06 DC with sunroof?

Any chance you can find something that doesn't require drilling?

I know Thule (and prob Yakima and others) make a cross bar that doesn't require drilling holes,

I'm sure @Victory4x4 is very aware of all of the "no-go" areas by now.

@slowpokepete: Good question. I currently use Yakima bases with clips that reach down between the door and the frame. Unfortunately, at highway speed, they cause too much whistling from the seal that gets squished by the clip. I have looked at lots of options, and am convinced that a "permanent" mount will work best for my situation.

@The Californian: Thanks for the pointer to Victory4x4. I went back to the long and spicy thread you were referring to. Seems like the clear answer is to remove the headliner AND to use a drill stop. Then I should be good to go.

Our sequioa has a roof rack on top that's factory.

No whistling at all until you put anything up there. Then it sounds like you're on the space shuttle Columbia.

It also has no fairing so that may play a part in it.

Wrong truck. OP is asking about a 1st Gen but your point is valid!

OP the only “safe” way to know where to drill is to drop the ceiling liner and look. The Victory 4x4 fiasco taught us that every truck may be a bit different... so safest is to look and verify clearance before you drill.

Edit: ah, man. I see you’re already up to speed.

Got my hopes up somebody was installing one of those spider roof racks for a double cab. It’s a drill to install unit.

Here we go again.... at least it's not a 3rd gen.

Drop the headliner edges slightly (easy) and drill away with confidence!
