I just bought a 2007 with 200k+ miles, runs like a champ, but I was wondering if anyone can help me out here with a question I have. I always liked those little amber lights on the roof, you see them on plow trucks. Was wondering if they are a pain to put on, and if anyone has done it?
I'm not going to plow I just like the look of those lights.

    Alot of them
They don't look right on our trucks. They weren't built in the 80's.

Cab lights typically require drilling holes in your roof. They were put on HD vehicles, usually due to clearance size of the vehicle, like the raptors including the amber lights on the grille for being so wide.

There are numerous cab marker, light kits on Amazon and e-bay. They do require drilling a hole in the cab, but generally seal well when installed properly. If you like it, go for it - it's your truck and your dough.

I've done it on a F250. The lights have nothing to do with the 80s and everything to do with federal regulations for commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicles over 10K GVWR are required to have certain lights including the amber roof lights. There are also required to have red lights on the back center.

Since the manufacturers don't know if the truck will be treated as commercial, they install the lights on pickups above 10K.

If you want them to look like the Heavy duty trucks they are not spaced equally. It is 3 in the middle and one near each corner.

Now for some thoughts on the install:
You are dealing with a compound curve so measuring can be tricky. My FIL, he owned a body shop for 40+ years, helped me. We established a centerline front to back by creating multiple points side to side then connecting them. This creates a reference for establishing the side to side positions. Now you can create parallel lines to establish each lights position. And along those lines you can establish standard set backs.

get a dress makers measuring tape, the cloth one, it will follow contours better for measuring.

this guy does a good job of explaining the layout on a Silverado.

The kits come with cheap feeling foam pads for the lights to sit on. We went with the Dodge kits that come with rubber pads that the lights sit IN meaning there is a lip of rubber that comes up a little along the perimeter of the light where it contacts the cab.

Yup, x2. We did it this way and haven't had any regretful cuts made or holes drilled. Didn't use a tailor's tape but I have one and it would've been nice for sure.
