When I start my truck from my app (watch or phone) the truck will start as it should but when i open the door, the engine shuts off. Is this what is normal? If so, what is the purpose of having to restart it?

This is normal and supposedly it’s a safety feature. Rumors there was going to be an update to remove this. Nothing I have heard about to recently.

Yes that is normal and is dumb. It is that way on all Toyota vehicles w/ factory remote start. It is a "safety feature" in that it basically removes all chances of Toyota being liable for someone trying to steal your truck while its remote started.

Has anyone found an aftermarket remote start provider for the new Tundra? I have Drone Mobile on my other vehicles and it works perfect. It does not kill motor when you open the door. They haven’t offered a package for 3rd gen Tundra yet.

I can't speak to this gen, but I had a viper on my previous gen that worked without shutting the truck off when the door opened. It also gave me the option of 15 min run time as opposed to 10.

    1. did you have a key?
1.a if you did have a key, then the drone mobile will not shut down
    2. if you didnt have a key and have drone mobile, i am pretty sure the engine shuts off when you open the door.

from what i have been told, the reason remote starts shut off the engine is because the rolling code between the fob and ecu are reset when you unlock the vehicle. so the code that is used when you remote start it (9999) is re-generated as a new number when you open the door (8888)

easiest way to tell if this is the case is if the remote start unlocks the doors, starts the vehicle, then locks the door.

on my 2014 4runner my drone mobile remote start module does this on my push to start (PTS)

on our 2018 tundra, the drone mobile mimics the key fob code (we have an actual key) and sends a signal to the ignition key ring (you may remember the old days you had to hide a key and run a signal wire to the ignition key switch from that hidden key.

i remember it took drone mobile a while to break the "G" series keys to use remote start modules

Would be nice if you had choice to override shutoff when door opens. That way they would not be liable for anything. I will not be purchasing remote start after trial period runs out because of it. Actually, don't use it now.

the issue i have right now is the ROI of the oem vs drone mobile.

oem is like $80 yr for a remote

    drone :

    1. $350-400 for cost and install
    2. 5yr plan pre-paid is $180

so you will have to go at least 5 yrs on oem plan to roughly break even between the cost.

i prefer the aftermarket remote starts since you can pick a run time instead of the oem 10 min max

we usually have ours set for 20-25 mins since sometimes it takes forever to warm up the inside when its in the -20F range.

so the idea of drone is that it should (eventually) leverage the 2022 tundra factory remote start? or do you still have to put in a 3rd party remote start? Being in Canada would be nice to extend the runtimes.

drone mobile uses it own module that has a 4G modem to transmit commands. otherwise kinda pointless to use toyota system that costs $80 a year then charge you another $50 to use the drone system.

thats a horrible idea to have drone to send commands to the toyota system and i am pretty sure you have to pay toyota to enable remote start functionality for the drone to interact with it.

who wants to pay 2 different companies for the same function.

ah got it. i was under the impression drone was somehow interfacing with the toyota remote start hardware directly (bypassing their software/fees).

Yes I had a key but I used OEM remote to unlock the vehicle and the motor continued to run. I started the vehicle with my phone. Once you put the key in ignition and turned to run position you were ready to go. Also had a 30 min run timer which was needed to get a good warm up in winter. The phone app worked flawlessly. It was especially nice when I landed at the airport. Started it on the plane and by time I got to my vehicle it was nice and warm. I'll keep in touch with Drone Mobile and post when they offer it for 3rd gen Tundra.

The CM-DC3 and a handful of similar modules sold under quite a few different names including Drone, Compustar, etc. are now capable of bypassing the immobilizer. There a handful of wires to splice, but it is a rather simple process, and will allow for remote start of the vehicle while also allowing for take over (engine will not shut off when the vehicle door is entered, although the key still must be present to drive off.) I'll see if i can attach a copy of the installation manual so you can check it out.

I should have mentioned but it probably goes without saying that you can add on a large variety of aftermarket remotes, or stick with the factory remote. You can also add a 4G LTE cellular module if you wish to use the phone app to remote start / monitor the vehicle. All of this works on top of Toyota's factory system. Although it is probably unlikely that you would find yourself wanting to use Toyota's remote start app if one went through the trouble to install an aftermarket system that supports take over such as these. No fees (unless cellular, which is the same or less than Toyota's), supports take-over, secure (no one is driving off with the vehicle). It's beyond me why Toyota and Honda wont get with the times and do what so many other manufactures have done for years, without issue..

if you have a key then the engine will not shut off when you open the door.

the engine shut off only applies if you have PTS system (push to start button)

I like this option...I used to install alarms and remote starts for years. Haven't done one in 10 years due to the complexity of systems now coupled with factory remote starts.

I haven't got my tundra yet but this will be on my radar for sure

I've had the CM-DC3 installed for a few months now. No complaints except the wireless carplay handoff can be a little clunky on occasion. No issues when connecting via bluetooth without carplay, FWIW. I still need to do a little more investigating and see if I can figure out a solution there.
I went with the cellular option, which comes with a year of service, and then a few bucks a months from then on. Worth noting that the vehicle will remote start with the key fob regardless of cellular option being enabled or not. The selling point for myself was the immobilizer bypass. I'm sure some won't find it worth it, but to me it was. Remote start the truck, then hop in (with the key) and simply put it in gear and give off.

As for install, I'd say intermediate in difficulty. There are over a dozen splices and connections to be made, with nearly all the wires being very small gauge, so difficult to work with if not well versed with wiring. Goes without saying, but you won't want to be goofing up any of these connections or you'll risk damaging a module that could cost big money. Hopefully with a little time they will come up with a plug and play option, although I have a feeling those connectors going into the various ECUs will be difficult to source, and potentially a cost prohibitive endeavour for the seller.

same screen as mycarcontrols app. just renewed our yearly sub for another $40. remote start + gps location (2 minute between refresh). alot cheaper than what drone mobile charges for just adding gps.

Does anyone know if the run time on the Gen 3 Toyota remote start can be increased? Mine times out after 10 minutes. Guessing it would have to be a dealer mod but my dealer didn’t know.

Yep, same pricing over here. With the 3 year option, it brings the price down to $2.78 per month, or $99. Not too bad considering..

I don't recall seeing the option to change the time-out in Toyota's techstream. I do know with the aftermarket units like I have installed, the time-out is 15 minutes by default.

Thanks. I may install Drone Mobile once my free year is up with Toyota. You can set run time up to 25 minutes and I’m hoping keep it running when you open the door. I have it on my wife’s Avalon and it works great and costs $4 per month.
