    Hey guys,

I bought a 2021 Crewmax not too long ago. Got rid of the old trifling 2013 Sierra. No love lost! Anyways, I'm used to the truck continuing to run if I start the truck with the remote start. When I start my truck with either my phone or the FOB, as soon as I open the door the truck shuts off. I restart it once I get in the truck. Is this normal? Seems like it should continue to run. Thanks a lot.

That’s the way the oem one is designed. Aftermarket ones work differently, like having to press the pedal to shut it off.

That's how the factory one works. A little annoying, but oh well.

I would imagine that it was a decision left up to their legal department. For example, this is what we have to deal with in the state or Oregon.

    ORS 811.585¹
    Failure to secure motor vehicle

    • • affirmative defense
    • • penalty
(1)A person commits the offense of failure to secure a motor vehicle if the person is driving or is in charge of a motor vehicle and:

(a)The person permits the vehicle to stand unattended on a highway without first doing all of the following:

    (A)Stopping the engine.

(B)Turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway when standing upon any grade.

    (C)Locking the ignition.

(D)Removing the key from the ignition.

(E)Effectively setting the brake on the vehicle; or

(b)The person is the owner of an unattended motor vehicle parked on a highway in violation of paragraph (a) of this subsection.

(2)It is an affirmative defense to a prosecution of the owner of a vehicle under subsection (1)(b) of this section that the use of the vehicle was not authorized by the owner, either expressly or by implication.

    (3)The offense described in this section, failure to secure a motor vehicle, is a Class D traffic violation. [1983 c.338 §676; 1985 c.16 §326; 1987 c.687 §7; 1995 c.383 §81]

Ok, all good. Just making sure it was doing as it was supposed to. Different, but small stuff compared to GM issues. Thanks a lot

Yea, our Honda stays in a safe mode as the engine is on. Doors unlock and lock as usual, but in order to put it in drive you need the key to turn the car all the way on.

if i remember correctly, those with push start are permanently stuck with this and third party cannot override it

Didn’t know that. That sucks. But if I had an oem one, I’m not sure I’d pay to switch it out. I do like the fact that my fob works and I can open the door when remote started. On my 2010 the fob wouldn’t work once remote started.

Definitely a stupid design. I have same issue with mine. Came from a Ford Sport Trac remote that left engine running when you unlocked doors. If you don't put key in and turn it and hit the brake then the engine turns off. Wish I could do the same with Tundra. or wish I knew it was like this before I paid the extra $$ to Toyota for it.

Trade your Tundra in on a Ford - problem solved. No more stupid remote start issue. You’ll have a lot of other issues, but the remote start won’t be one of them.

    First world problems.

In three months I’ve used my remote start twice. Never had one before, so not in the habit of having one.

Now, heated seats? Yeah... I’ve gotten used to those real quick. :bananadead:

For sure. Heated seats are nice for aching muscles. I’m good with a somewhat warm truck inside when it gets super cold

I use my remote start when I know it's cold enough to have frost. I hate getting in the truck and waiting to be able to see out the windshield. I've never had it before so it's taking some getting used to. I never really got used to it during the summertime. Maybe I'll be more used to it this summer.

I’ll admit, I live in about the most mild climate in the U.S. We rarely get below freezing, and we rarely break 90 in the summer... so defrosting windows and trying to cool down the interior to keep from burning myself on the leather seats are both fairly foreign to people from this area.

I grew up in N. Idaho with more extremes but have been here 24 years now. I almost forgot the habit of lifting your wipers off the windshield in the winter...

Yup - We gotta worry about the earth shaking every so often (Cali might fall into the ocean some day :notsure: ) but other than that it’s pretty good. Not expecting any of the big mountains to blow any time soon. No hurricanes - our annual rain is spread out across 9 months instead of coming down in a couple weeks, and the wind only blows hard in the Columbia Gorge.

is it just me but the remote keyfob works at maybe top 20feet away... and that is if I stretch my arm out to make it more like 19' 117/8". it is pointless. but to be honest, the keyfob reach and the remote start suckiness are my only two complaints about the truck so I am happy.

If you are out of range, hold your keyfob up to the bottom of your chin, holding it to the fleshy part right behind the bone, open your mouth, and push the button. The water in your head acts as an amplifier for the signal. I think opening your mouth helps a little too.

No complaints here about the remote start. 10 mins is enough to warm up my truck in 0 degree weather, and I have no problems pushing the button to start the truck after getting in. Its not hard.

I just wish I could remotely turn the AC to Defrost. I keep forgetting to do that when I park at night, so even with the remote start I still have some frost on the windshield some mornings.

My buddy has that on his F150. Most annoying feature for those that don't like using it. Worst is you have to keep turning off every time you get in.

I tested this today. When I shut my truck off it was on legs, low fan, 68 degrees. When I remote started it, it went to 72, full fan, defrost windshield and turned on the defrost mirror/back window button as well. Something new they changed for 2021 or is there a setting somewhere to change default HVAC behavior for remote start?

I have auto climate, do you? That may be the key difference.

I have auto climate as well. How cold was it where you are? That may be the difference. We were just down in the low 30's, just enough for frost to form. I'll have to investigate to see if this is new on 21's.

If that was in Alaska they'd have to ticket pretty much everyone in the state every day in the winter.
