If diesel was 1.09 then gasoline must have been about .85

My oldest memory of gas was $0.69 back in the 80s. Hopefully people aren’t starting to think $4+ is the “new normal”.

Pretty sure the $1.09 diesel was before the major surge in popularity and it was actually cheaper than gasoline. I do remember when gas was $1.19 per gallon, though...

I remember walking to 7-11 with a metal gas can and a quarter to buy a gallon of gas for the lawn mower. That was 1972 or 1973 in Bell County Texas.

Yes yes those were the days when most people could get in the 6000 lb car and drive around all day and not be concerned about draining the tank.

funny, I did see another scene in the movie and you are correct. The diesel was about 11 cents cheaper than gasoline. If I didn't need/want a truck so bad I would have bought a Tesla and get away from the oil companies robbing all of us. At least I know I have a truck that will last probably the rest of my days and when it is paid off I will probably buy a Tesla all electric for a daily driver.

It is. 80% of the dollars in our money supply have been printed in the last 2 years. Not normal monetary behavior

Yes, diesel was cheaper than gasoline.

This all changed when US automakers *cough* GM *cough* started making diesel passenger cars. There were big trucking strikes because diesel prices all of a sudden went through the roof. And they NEVER came back down.

The gasoline v8 engine that was converted into a diesel (we had 2 Oldsmobiles with this: Delta 88 and Delta 98) seemed to start this. Biggest POS ever. The fuel filter(s) were an absolute joke. Massively undersized and not up to the task. We ended up putting on heated RAYCOR fuel filter/water separators we got from a John Deer farm implement dealer in each car.

I just realized how sad this makes me. A bunch of 30-40 yr old dudes reminiscing about gas prices from the 80s and 90s. :(

Those days are gone. I don’t believe fuel prices will ever go back down by a meaningful margin. And I think that’s the point.

    Happy Monday!

Hell, I remember taking my Mom's Oldsmobile 98 when me and my friends would ride around on Friday/Saturday nights. Flip the air filter cover on the 455/4 barrel so we could hear that beast come alive. When the night was done and we had to head back home, it would take about $5.00 bucks to get it back to full. Now who's dating themselves??

Oh I remember those diesel cars. We had a Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme and it had a diesel engine. I think it would do 70mgh downhill with a tailwind with black smoke pouring out of the back. Then one day the crank busted and the fan found its way through the radiator and into the grill. My dad and his brother then put a 350 in it to make it a car again.

I remember when I started driving in 1978, you could use your loose change that was in your ashtray and buy some gas.
It would last you several days, at least until your next paycheck later in the week.

I was driving one of these back then.

That wouldn't even make a one-way daily trip to work now.

I remember when gas was 26.9 cents a gallon, cigarettes were .25 a pack and it was a dollar for the car wash. Ten bucks would get a full tank, cigs, lunch and a car wash with change to spare.
