Has anyone else had rear wheel bearing issues? Mine started out as the right rear wheel speed sensor, had the sensor replaced and the warning lights & code were back on within a couple weeks. After doing some research found out about the rear wheel bearing issue, the dealer now has my truck and could not remove the axle form the housing to get the bearings out, they had to order a complete rear end assembly. 52,356 miles thank goddess it’s a warranty issue.

My 2016 Toyota Tundra Limited has been growling upon acceleration, deceleration and while on the highway for a month. At first inspection by dealer, they heard it but couldn't find the problem and told me to drive it until it got worse. My husband thought that was ridiculous, so today I went back. When I left the dealership at noon, they said they were about to tear onto the transmission. Now, at 5 p.m., I receive a call saying they've discovered it's the rear wheel bearings. I'm hoping they didn't open up my transmission in the meantime? Anyway, fyi, check those rear wheel bearings! I was at 58,500 when the noise started. Thank goodness power train warranty is to 60,000.

I have a 2016 Limited (49k miles) that just had a bad driver side rear bearing-- That was my guess at least. I took it to the dealership because I have the extended 125k warranty. After they took a look at it they told me I was correct. The bearing was bad but it was caused by a bent axel shaft which is not covered under the warranty?!? Can anyone explain to me how you bend an axel without knowing it? This truck has never been in an accident, driven hard, hauled anything, etc... They told me it must have been a pothole. Either this dealership is very dishonest or I am really questioning the quality of my Tundra.

I had them save the axel and I took it to work to indicate on a lathe. I don't know what the tolerances are on a axel but I was getting very little variance (< 10 thousandth) without even cleaning up the surface (surface rust). My next step is to take it to a local machine shop and have them measure it.

Anyone know what a Tundra axel tolerance is? Trying to figure out a way to get my $2151.91 back.

I don’t know with the tolerances are but maybe it was bent in a parking lot. Someone could’ve hit it and you would never know the difference.

    Thank you for the response!

I would image that if I got hit in a parking lot that there would be some kind of damage somewhere on the truck. The truck still had the original tires / wheels that I purchased it new with (no damage to any of them) and I would think if someone hit elsewhere there would be a dent left or some kind of evidence that the truck got hit hard enough to bend an axel.

A co worker of mine had his wheel bearings changed last year after hearing a ticking when turning. It drove him nuts till we could hunt down where the sound was coming from. The dealer he took it to said it was the bearings and told him that they usually go bad from people who actually use their truck to tow and haul. It made sense because out of the 3 sencond gen tundras at work he Is the only one who really uses his truck to haul (he loads up big 7' oak logs for milling) and the other two are mainly just transportation to and from work. The one second gen has 225 on it by now and hasn't needed bearings, oddly enough it needed rear leafs tho because they cracked.

Not the first time I've heard of this. Any heavy loading in the bed or towing...that might have been over the axle capacity?

A bent axle shaft or axle housing? Big difference.

If in fact it was a bent axle shaft, why in gods good name would the dealership just not install a new axle shaft?

    That money is gone.

Most axles are not perfectly true, and 10 thousandths is nothing. To see how true an axle really is, the shop would need to use an alignment bar.

They did replace the axel shaft-- along with the axel bearing, seal and parking brake shoes. They stated that all these components were damaged because of a bent axel shaft which is not covered under the warranty. I do understand why the axel is not covered under warranty--what I don't understand is how you bend one on a truck that has never left pavement and has never towed / hauled anything and not realize it.

After replacing my rear brake pads and rotors I noticed a scraping sound from my passenger rear wheel that would speed up/slow down with my speed. After doing some investigation I found that the hub was spinning in an oval and with the larger rotors it was causing it to scrape the dust shield.

This leads me to believe the bearing is bad or the shaft is not straight. I do tow/haul frequently but nothing excessive. However, I don't know what the previous owner did for the 50k mi they had it but I see signs that they didn't take the best care of the truck and were maybe a little hard on it.

My question is - is there an easy (visual?) way to inspect the axle shaft before I replace the bearing? I don't want to replace the bearing and have to do it again down the road due to a larger issue.

I have minimal mechanical experience so bear with me here - Wouldn't a bad bearing show run out at the hub? So I would need to replace the bearing THEN measure run out and if there's still excessive then it's a shaft or housing issue. At that point I would take the shaft to a shop to measure run out to see if it's the shaft or the housing.

    Is all that accurate?

    That is correct.

Check first to see if you have excessive runout. Since you have to press off and on the new bearing, at this point I would just have a machine shop check the axle shaft.

    This was bullshit.

The axles come out very easy. They just felt like letting warranty foot the bill.

I came across this today on the drive home. Not sure if you can see the drivers side rear wheel assembly in the video, but that axle or wheel is bent pretty good.

nope. I live in VA. Not much snow where I am at and this happened in the last month. The only person ever to drive my truck other than me is the dealership (maintenance and whoever appraised it when I was looking to trade in on a 1794). My suspicion is trying to get out of warranty work.

I don't think you had a bad axle. I just think they were lazy or did not have a 20 ton press with the correct berring removal brackets. There is no way they could have found that small of run out with axle still assembled.
