I have an 02 Toyota tundra, and I thought the sound was coming from the front but it wasn’t. It’s actually the back, but it really does sound like it’s coming from the front I believe it’s my rear wheel keeps making a womp womp womp womp womp, womp womp sound going down the road and it keeps getting faster and faster whenever I accelerate. I know it’s not good for it because it feels really rough. I even placed a video so you guys can actually hear it. Hopefully if you guys can tell me what’s going on with it please do because I am at a loss and it’s really bumming me out . Thank you. I don’t know if my video came up or not. This thing is being really stupid.

Stupid question, but did anything happen leading up to this sound starting? Like ... Hit a pothole? Do some maintenance?

Another stupid question, have you done basics, like making sure the wheel is fully torqued on, and all lug nuts are there?

"WOMP WOMP WOMP WOMP" sound could be wheel bearings, or a few other things.

But I don't see your video. If you go to www.imgur.com and drag/drop the video in, then give us a link to that Imgur page, it should auto-embed here. Or upload to YouTube.

    Wheel bearing.

Others can confirm they agree but that sounds like de facto wheel bearing to me.

Check your rear drive line and rear end. Sounds like a bearing.

My 2000 made similar noise but not as annoying when right rear bearing went out. The bearing usually fail after a seal fails allowing the gear oil to enter the bearing. The bearing and a spacer are pressed onto the axle. If the spacing is not correct the seal will fail. Several threads about this on the site.

Worth mentioning too, if the diff breather is clogged, can lead to said blowout in the rear. $10 part that can cause a loooooot of pain in the wallet. A little "gasp" of air when you unscrew is normal.

@FrenchToasty is that similar to the noise you had when your bearing went out?

I had both rear wheel bearings replaced about a year apart (one twice because they didn't press the bearing properly the first go round) and that sounds very similar to what I was hearing. I had jacked up the rear end and put it in gear to get the wheels turning which made it easy to identify which wheel was the culprit.

Ok my truck it was most audible between 35 and 55mph.

remove it, clean it, replace it. Check that it opens.

not replace it like buying a new one...i meant put it back in.

And if you have a boat or PWC. Get some hose and relocate the breather into the left taillight opening

And it should be a one-way valve, lets air out at a specific pressure, doesn't let it back in.

Spin the top, try to push it in/out, pop it off to blow and attempt inhaling through it, you should only get resistance one way. Or just replace the f'n thing it's like $10, part number for my 2006 is 90930A3001 and it may be the same for yours (not sure).

Any signs of oil inside the rear drums? My seals failed probably due to a clogged breather and the gear oil that seeped out washed the grease out of the wheel bearings causing them to fail.

Stack some washers, use a couple lugnuts to load the drum on tight. Happening for both at the same time is odd. Like maybe something wrong with the carrier (diff).

Don't do that. Don't jack your truck up with a floor jack and not chock the wheels and run the engine and put it in gear and rev it up. Asking for a Failarmy video. That aside, sounds like bearing as it does not drag 1:1 with tire rotation. The noise can transmit through the axle regardless of which side its coming from.

The noise doesn't seem to be occurring at the same rate as the wheel rotation. More like 2 wheel rotations for 1 womp noise. If it were brakes dragging, it would be 1:1. The wheel bearings don't turn 1:1 with the wheel rotation. See rotation of the bearings around 2:28 in this video. Also 5:57.
