I was wondering if anybody has this that can attest to its impregnability? I feel like it can just be wedged open and I would like something secure that can store a rifle to be used to protect myself and my family. Has anybody seen any other safe for the 3rd generation Tundra that you can recommend? Thanks.

For me, any self defense weapon has to be easily and quickly accessible from the driver's seat. I can't think of many life threatening situations when I'd have time to get out of my truck, open the rear door, lift the rear seat, unlock a lid, and grab a rifle.

Besides a rifle isn't particularly useful for self defense, anyway, IMO

Thank you for your opinion. However, there are many documented situations where an active shooter is confronted by an individual with rifle such as the Sutherland Springs church shooting of 2017 or the Tacoma, WA incident in 2022 where an active shooter was engaged at a distance of 183 yards with an carbine. That being said, I am still interested in safe storage options for the 3rd gen Tundra if anybody has any.

You’re not gonna be gunning down an active shooter at 50+ yards and convincing anyone that it was self defense. Regardless, a locking box under your rear seat is a deterrent, not a fool proof way to protect items.

Exactly. I know a couple of gun guys who fantasize about engaging and taking down an active shooter with their fancy ARs. I tell them to be careful what they wish for.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a strong supporter of my 2A rights, and I have plenty of firearms. But for a true self-defense weapon in my truck, I prefer my Glock 40 cal. It's small, easy to access, and still packs enough punch to do the job. I pray I never have to use it.

So you're implying that a distance of an armed confrontation needs to be under a certain number to be considered self defense? In 2022, in a mall in Greenwood, IN, an armed civilian named Elisjsha Dicken shot and killed an active shooter at a distance of 40 yards with a pistol. That was self defense. Thanks for your opinion, but the point of this post is to find secure storage options for the 3rd gen Tundra not to debate the practicality of exercising my 2nd Amendment rights.

The only reason many of us carry a handgun is because it's too hard to carry a rifle. When we have the ability to have our truck carry a rifle for us, why not? No two people ever have the exact same circumstances that bring them to these choices, so my best advise is to let people take care of their own needs their own way.

Ah yes, the infamous Dickens case. The kid pulled off a display of marksmanship that 99.9% of pistol owners aren't capable of, especially under duress.

Besides, that was with a pistol and I presume he had a CCL. Do you plan to stroll around malls with your rifle?

Do what you want, obviously. If you want to drive around with your rifle in a locked box to prepare you for a one in a million event in which you could legally use it for self defense, go for it.

My state is not an open carry state so I cannot legally carry a rifle around a mall. But to have and hope you never have to use is what the 2nd Amendment is for, sir. I'm not sure why you're criticizing me being "a strong supporter of my 2A rights". I'm just looking for a secure storage option for the 3rd gen Tundra.

So, no one has any experience with this locking rear seat compartment?

I’m im interested in it, but have only seen very general reviews that don’t really address OP’s questions.

To be clear, I never criticized you.

But, you did claim your whole purpose for carrying your rifle in your truck was to protect you and your family. In the case of an active shooter, the safest thing you and your family could do is stay in your truck, and keep your heads down. Not try to play hero and engage the shooter. Your truck is more likely to get stolen, with your rifle inside, than the likelihood of you ever using it in a self-defense situation. Fact.

As a gun enthusiast my whole life (63 years), I've seen a new breed of gun guys develop, who actually fantasize about engaging a shooter. That's a very dangerous mindset, IMO.

Anyway, good luck finding what you're looking for. I'm out.

Safely retreat is the best philosophy. Especially if you have family with you. Find an opening and spin up the turbos.

That said, you don’t necessarily get to choose the scenario. If I were unable to escape a situation, I would much prefer a rifle over a handgun.

This. Just as some gun owners constantly ponder situations and how one would react (not that there's anything really wrong with that,) they often fail to note that the real world is way more complicated and never plays out as planned. You just never know what's going to happen, and if you have a way to cover a gap that exists in your neck of the woods or in your life, by all means go for it.

In my neck of the woods, and given that my Tundra isn't a daily driver that finds itself in unpredictable and places, a truck gun isn't a high priority for me. A future life will likely be much different, so I'm interested in what the OP comes up with.

Self-defense OR defense of others. You can absolutely take out an active shooter at 50+ yards (or any distance). Distance of shot is not mentioned in the language of the law.

Car safes are meant to be deterrents; not “impregnable”. If you’re looking for something impregnable you’re going to have to delete the rear seat and bolt down a liberty safe.

I think reasonable security is all anyone is asking for. That’s why he created the post to start. To solicit opinions on the product.

You have a valid point. But what if your children are in the school building with the active shooter and you happen to live a block away like me? And police in my area seem to have a response time of over 30 minutes. Lets say it takes police 10 minutes to respond. What is an active shooter going to do in 10 minutes? I can be there in 2 minutes. I served 2 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. I carried an M-4 everyday in my 9 years in the army. I can shoot a pistol out to about 50 yards. And yet I don't have a fantasy about engaging an active shooter. I have a fantasy about seeing my children grow old. I'm not sitting on a "high horse" listening to what everyone has to say. My children are legitimately scared to go to the Catholic school that I pay $8k per child per year to attend because of what happened in Minnesota. I told my kids that they'll be safe because dad is coming.

That "safe" doesn't look very secure. This is what I use for long gun storage. You can't get to the door without opening the tailgate. Most people don't even notice it. Custom fabricated locally.20250529_075445.jpg Pic is from before my camper shell was installed.

Custom fabricated and rattle can painted. It bolts on behind the track using the factory bolts. Check my build thread for my 2016 (link at bottom) it shows a little more detail of the door.

Take a concealed weapons course. It’s one thing to be in a situation like a closed mall, armed with a concealed weapon like a pistol, get “trapped” in a a situation with an armed assailant, and engage with them out of fear for your life It’s another to run to your truck, get a rifle out, and then go engage with an “active shooter” situation. Thats borderline vigilante justice. And there is no such thing as secure storage. Just levels of difficulty accessing said storage.

Stephen Willeford would beg to differ. In fact, this hero ran 150 yards to engage the active shooter.

Unless you live in a state you can’t get a concealed weapons permit (time to move) then get one of those first and carry a small pistol on you since that’s the highest probability situation. Then have a pistol safe somewhere in the front of the truck, which is really just to keep kids and like people working on the truck out of it (aka honest people and small kids with no tools). Rear compartment is fine but just as easily could be a regular compartment with a rifle and cord lock since the compartment is only going to keep out kids/casual honest people. Obviously if you have a 400$ metal compartment there is something worth 10 seconds of crowbar to open. Definitely use cases for rifles in the rear, hidden is best, just have the concealed pistol situation figured out first.

Alot of gun people talk a big game but their really cool 36oz pistol and Aero precision Acog 6.8 grendel is locked in their safe at home 90% of the time while the only weapon on their person is their sharp self satisfaction lol.
