Rear bumper shifted or hit and run?

anyone ever heard of or seen the rear bumper shift on one side? Was just washing my truck and noticed on the passenger side the bumper is all the way up into the truck body and paint. Haven’t gone hardly anywhere in weeks and when i do I park at the very back, backed in a mile away from everyone else. I’m baffled because there are no scrapes or any markings to indicate I was hit.. nothing appears bent...? It’s pushed in so far it cut into my paint on the outside edge. Pics attached along with a few shots of driver side for comparison. Driver side still has the normal spacing.

 

Looks like it’s been hit.same exact thing happened to me. Check under the bumper. There is a metal strut that stabilized the body panel of the bed just behind the bumper. Mine was bent on the side that was touching the bed. It’s like 4000 dollar fix since they have to replace the bumper and paint/ clear that paint damage. If you go through insurance...

 

Looks to me like it was pushed in. Hard to believe it moved that much on its own

Something had to have pushed it in. What's it look like underneath in regards to the brackets etc.?

 

Guess someone popped me at the grocery store, I took some pics from underneath and don’t see any bent pieces

 

This is the piece that was bent on mine. Check the trueness all the way up to the bed and compare it with the other side. Sucks man. Sorry this happened to you.

 

Is that piece able to be pulled off and straightened out any?

 

Looks like the OP just needs to replace the bumper end cap. So not including the paint it is hundreds not thousands.

 

End cap not damaged at all though, I’m wondering if I can RE adjust it.

 

Something’s tweaked. It was bolted in place and has been forced out of position. Metal has been bent. Not the bumper cap, the bumper most likely. You can most likely repair it but it will never be as strong again. Seems to me like that’s a bad thing for a rear bumper.

stock rear bumper from Toyota was around 1800 last time I checked about two weeks ago.

No problem. I’m hoping it’s minor and you can just tweak it if that’s your prerogative.

Granted you don’t have to replace that strut. Also when mine was hit it tweaked the tailgate so make sure you’re is straight. You can see the difference on each side. First pic is bad side, second pic is good side.

 

Aren't these trucks notorious for the misaligned rear bumper? Mine is noticeably closer on one side versus the other and when I researched it there were a lot of 2014+ Tundras with that issue.

Yes but they don’t move on their own. I readjusted mine to almost perfect when I bought the truck. I could see if it was way off from the factory and you took the truck off road that it might end up rubbing the paint. Our frames do flex pretty good as well as the bed upon articulation. But it shouldn’t contact the bumper without assistance LOL.

 

More than likely you backed into a spot with raised earth behind it, a small grass hill or something and didn’t even realize it because there was no “collision”. I always back into spots far, far away from the masses and constantly find clumps of dirt and grass around the bumper/hitch.

 

Okay, got ya'. I knew I had read that they often come misaligned from the factory and figured that apparently mine was one of them. I never even knew about it until the vinyl guy pointed it out after he'd wrapped it.

But if OP's wasn't like that before and now it is, then yeah I see what you're talking about.

Oddball question. Is the bed where it should be, or did it shift? My folks got a new tundra and one of the bed bolts was loose.

 

Ok now stop it. First I had to run out and make sure the bumper was aligned correctly...and now I have to go do the same for the bed! LOL

 

No doubt! When I had my bed lined they didn’t tighten up the bed bolts enough. I could hear it shifting. Loosened them all up and got the bed square with the cab again.

I assume. It’s pretty flimsy. My guess it just keeps the bed from shaking in the wind on those unsupported back panels. I was in the truck when I got hit so I’m going through insurance and having the piece replaced along with the bumper.

 

Ever tried to pop an end cap off before?

 

Tailgate and bed are OK, wish I could locate the bent support to try and force it back. Guess I’ll have the dealership look at it when I go in next. It already cut through the paint pretty deep so whatever, the damage is done. It appears it’s not just pushed forward on the right side, but up too. See attached comparing spacing between bumper and tailgate. Left to right, about .5” on left to zero on the right.

 

Update:

loosened the bolts underneath, grabbed the edge of the bumper and pushed my feet into the spare tire for leverage. I was able to pull it back enough to get it off the paint.
