Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening? (only a small contact area for the rear pad). Do i need to get a new caliper, haven't opened it up yet, but wondering if someone has seen before?

You really need to pull the wheel off and investigate. Something could be caught between the pad and rotor. I wouldn’t purchase any parts yet.

Any noises while driving or braking?

Yea, i think there's a slight metal noise as the wheel turns. Had tires changed and i thought it may have been the dust cover, but upon investigating, i think it's the actual brake. it's there but hard to hear, need to really pay attention to it. I'll take it off today and take a look, was just trying to be prepared in case anybody had this issue before.

You'll have to pull the wheel off to look. I'm betting the caliper pins are seized so it's no longer sliding. You might be able to free up the caliper, but will probably need new rotors and pads. At that point, just put on new calipers too.

I would hesitate on putting new calipers on. If the rotors aren't too bad, you can lube up the slide pins and replace the pads and call it a day.

The rotor surface rust from parking overnight or extended parking goes away after driving and braking a few times. Basically the pads clean up the rust.

Seems like your pads are not making full contact with the rotors. I also see a line that could be a scratch like when the pads wear unevenly or down to the metal

I would definitely check the brakes before driving.

How many miles on the car or these brakes? Towing or off-roading in sand or mud?

Check and see if the slide pins are stuck. If so, pull the slide pins out and lube with silicone grease only, never use petroleum grease. Most automotive stores sell sil-glyde in a small packet at the counter which would work well.

Thanks everyone. Ended up replacing rotors and pads yesterday, hopefully that will cure it. Lubed everything up, pads seem to work. Forgot to readjust the parking brake though so :frusty:
