    Hello all,
Going home from work the other day and a lady pulled out and hit he side of my truck. I was running 50mph when she hit me and the wreck knocked the axel back about 6 to 8 inches. Enough it pulled my drive shaft out from the back of the transmission. Still waiting to hear back from their insurance (State Farm).
My question to you guys is how concerened should I be about the impact to my rear axel. I have allready had to replace the passenger side bearing at a cost of $1000.00 to about a year ago. Im worried about that being damaged again from the impact and also what damage could have happened to the gears.
What the chances I can get the insurance to replace my rear axel?

    TYIA

Ouch. This smells costly. I see replacements of driveshaft, at least one leaf pack (but they would have to change it in pair?) + shackles, possibly brake and ABS lines. Plus bodywork. Pinion bearings in rear diff and transfer case would need to be evaluated, too.

is the pumpkin against the spare? If so, the chances of the rear end being tweeked are greater. These aren't made of cast steel anymore.

Really not sure. Can't tell from the pictures and right now it's at the wrecker yard. Will have to take a better look at that.

I had a hit between the back door and bed that sheared the axle clean off the leafs like that. Ended up cracking the transmission tail housing. Due to other damages the truck was written off so idk how much or involved it would be to replace.

Might have a bent axle housing, don't take much

this...they'll have to tug at the frame, replace some hangers, springs, entire diff (Likely), wheel, bed side and bumper at bare minimum. Start saying your goodbyes

My thoughts exactly. A buddy of mine had the exact same thing happen to a Ranger that could not have been more than a few years old, totaled.

Can buy back from insurance if total loss, pretty cheap. Don't hurt to inquire.

I'd be shocked if the axle housing was still straight.

If it's totaled I would buy it back, find a used axle housing (or complete assembly) and swap a few parts. Should be pretty easy to fix from the look of it.

Sort of similar thing happened to me many years ago. I was doing about 50 mph in the right lane of a highway in a 1990? Jeep Cherokee getting ready to exit and a lady coming the opposite direction on the highway sideroad, lost control plowed through a chain link fence barrier onto the highway and hit my Jeep in the back end. Knocked the axle right off. I skidded to a stop and I was looking up as I had no rear axle.
When all was said and done, the Jeep was repaired, and I didn't know this but the axle was bent. Enough that it caused vibration issues through tires and when I finally had a 4 wheel alignment done, the guy saw the wear spots on the back tires where the axle was putting more pressure down. Ending up selling it.
Thinking back knocking the axle right off might have caused less damage than being hit with your Tundra and the axle is still attached as it braced the full impact.
So I would try to get the axle looked at by a specialty shop and replaced as part of the insurance repair.

If it is totaled most insurance companies will not insure it.

Liability and uninsured motorists works great here, just more savings. It comes down to buying it back cheap enough to justify taking a chance.

Most likely they will not total it from that hit, depending on your Ins Co. I think replacement of the rear diff and axle(s) may be the easiest, most likely cheapest alternative given the labor to repair, as well as the wheel that was hit. Then the body work, which seems minor-ish, my guess is around 5 - 10K to sort out. Keep on top of the shop and be a pain in their ass that will payoff a lot. Check my posts I went through something similar recently.

Got a call for the Body Shop yesterday. Their initial estimate is at $20000.00 plus so far. He said it will mostly likely be totaled by the insurance company. So far he said the Rear end, Drive Shaft, Tranmission, Spring Hangers, Springs, Rear Bumper, Exhaust all have to be replaced. Thats not including the Body repairs. Looks like I will be in the hunt for another truck. Still waiting to hear from the insurance company.
