Long time reader, first time poster. And brand new member.

Im wondering how bad the rust is on the 2004 DC that I recently purchased. This truck has 190k, mostly in WY and CO. The rust LOOKS like its all on the surface, with that plastic-y coating on the frame peeling in places.

I'm planning on doing the fluid film thing....but Im wondering......does anybody with experience with these trucks consider this level of rust unsafe? Im hoping to get 100k miles from this truck.

    Thanks in advance.

That looks like mine after 4 yrs in western New York. I wouldn’t worry about that at all!

It doesn't look too bad to me. That's how my 2017 Tacoma looked after 3 years in the Rockies.

3/10. Mostly some scale and coating flake. Should cleanup and retreat just fine. Those OE spec shocks though. Eww.

I agree, 3/10. If you're in a dry state, you've got another 20 years before it gets bad.

Welcome from NC! As others have said doesn’t look bad. Use a wire brush, some degreaser and respray it.

Thanks very much guys for the wisdom about this. About 8 years ago, I lost a Gen 1 to frame rust, so this is my second chance to be a long-term Gen 1 driver. Im excited to have a Gen 1 again and I'm excited that I found this forum......THANK YOU

Mild. Time to address it now before more layers sloth off.

Hit it with a wire brush before fluid filming.
