Question: would 4wd Hi work with Shift L (first gear) engaged?

I ask because the last time I tried (as I recall anyway) my 4wd Lo would not engage. Can one simply engage 4wd Hi then put the tranny into Shift Lo (first gear) for the same amount of pulling grunt?

Not the same amount of torque obviously but what are you trying to do? Pull a boat up a slippery ramp?

Your gear ratios are going to be the same in 4HI as when in 2WD. The only difference is you're pulling with the front wheels. I believe that the transmission defaults into 2nd gear in 4LO and locks out 1st gear to prevent breaking things. In other words, you can't manually shift the transmission into L with 4LO engaged. Too much torque.

Get my dummy question out of the way but were you in Neutral with brake peddle pressed when attempting to go into 4LO ?
Otherwise you may wish to check that out someday because you should be able to go into 4LO from 4HI while in Shift L(1st Gear)

    From 06 Owners Manual....

Whether it's for engine braking or help in up hill use, keep an eye on them RPM's and more importantly trans temps.

Worth mentioning it, but this exact info is in the Owner's Manual.

@Bought2Pull, I'm pretty sure I've mentioned it's worth taking a second to RTFM on other issues

    No judgment. Just sayin'. :)

Are you serious? You have NEVER said anything about the owner's manual. Not once.

Bust Out Another Thousand? Who's got money for one of those? LOL

I'd most likely be pulling someone out of a ditch or maybe pulling a big log across some client's yard.

Oh gosh, I am not sure. I was stopped with brake on, that much I am sure of. Hmm....

Guys I seldom hit 60 in the Tundra, pulling or not. 55 mph is about my top speed.

I don't have a tranny temperature gauge. What does it look like?

It’s interesting they don’t publish the gear ratio reduction of the transfer case in low gear within the owners manual or FSM. Other sources on the web state it to be 2.72:1 but no references to any toyota document available to the public. Guess you can determine that empirically though.

Guys I'm not trying to put down anyone that has a boat, I'd love to have one, if I had the time (and money) to enjoy it. God bless those that can.

I actually do own a boat. I bought a 12 foot aluminum rowboat out of a scrapyard once for $62.50. It's sat upside down on blocks in my yard ever since I brought it home. :hattip:

Seriously though, I'll put it on my list for tomorrow, to take a hard look at the owner's manual. I actually did read part of it, back when I had the truck for a week before actually buying it.

That’s more than me. I bought my Tundra in 2002 with the intention of buying a boat to go along with it. That never happened when I didn’t have a place to put it.

    What year is your Tundra?

I sometimes wish I had bought my Tundra when it was new but she works pretty well now and is meeting all our needs. I don't foresee us needing a greater towing capacity for some time yet.

    Wow, that's neat man, congrats.

I asked my dad tonight, knowing what he does of our Tundra, "would you have bought a Tundra instead of the Canyon you bought?" He replied "if I could have afforded it." (Oh he could have :p ).

On the "towing package" would mine qualify? Mine has a tow hitch, tranny cooler, and trailer wiring plug in. I'm thinking "yes" but I don't seem to have a tranny temp gauge.

Thanks. The Tundra was expensive back in 02 at around $28k for an SR5 compared to Fords or Chevys that were $4-5k cheaper.

As far as towing, your setup is fine. You can buy a Scanguage 2 and punch in the code for tranny temp to read it in real time. At least one or two other OBD2 scanners exist that are cheaper and can read the tranny temp.; maybe more since you have the 06 with the CANBUS interface.

If 7-pin, and not an aftermarket hitch, sure. There's also a tow relay or fuse in the engine bay IIRC.
