I know that my 2015 Tundra SR5 4x4 DC has a GVWR of 7,110 lbs
My new horse trailer weighs only 4,000 lbs (checked on public scale) but has a GVWR of 10,400 lbs because it is built strong for draft horses.
I will never be transporting more than 2,400 lbs in the trailer, for a total weight of 6,400 lbs including the weight of the trailer. Add some saddles and hay and that brings it to 7,000 lbs, well within that model's towing capacity of 11,000 lbs.

My questions is: If I just add up the Tundra and trailer's GVWR I come to a GCVWR of 17,510 lbs.
My research tells me that this exceeds my allowable GCVWR of 16,000 lbs.

It doesn't make sense. Should not the actual weight matter, not the weight rating? What are the legal implications?

What kind of oil are you using?

Actually, I don't see any model 4x4 that has a tow rating of 11,000. The highest I see for a 4x4 DC is 9800. I'm going by the 2013 manual, but I can't imagine that the 2015 is much different.

Oil? I have no idea. I always take it to the dealership for servicing - regular oil changes and everything else.

with a half ton truck total weight usually doesn't mean too much because you run out of payload before ever getting close to total weight limits. Im gonna guess that trailer has a tongue weight of 800-1000lbs empty. Add in the weight from your bed cap, WDH, horses and the stuff you want to carry and you already know your answer.

Folks run way over limits all the time. I see it happen almost every interstate trip I take. I have done it once in my life when I was young, towing a car back from NC to VA with an Isuzu trooper- 5k tow limit, car was about 3500 and trailer probably 2500 or more. The trip sucks and did cause some trans issues, never again....was the worse, white knuckle 6 hour trip of my life.

As far as legal implications, like everything else, all is good until it is not. If you are in an accident, hurt someone, you can bet the other folks lawyer will be looking into every possibility to add faults to you and make you pay. Of course that may never happen, roll of the dice.

Scales, friend. Gcvwr are all max ratings. View it as the ceiling for what you can tow. It's like a plastic bag. You can put a can of soup in it, or you can put 2 gallons of milk in it. Doesnt matter to the manufacturer, but they'll tell you that the bag will break at 1.5 gallons.

    Does that make sense?

793 lbs tongue weight empty. Add 150 lbs to the tongue with the horse in the first stall, add 60 lbs WDH, 200 lbs ARE TW shell, small fridge, inverter and extra battery another 120 lbs, me 150 lbs (true weight), dog 30 lbs. Total without food for camping, utensils, etc is so I am already 53 lbs over my max payload of 1450 lbs for my model.

Guess I will be trading in my Tundra. The only other horse trailers I have found are the cheap lightweight ones that will kill my horse even in a fender bender accident. Maybe the new 2022 Tundras will have a better payload capacity. The service manager at my dealership has promised that it would be. So let's see.

Just checked the specs on my daughters F150 TowMax. It can handle the weight. So there are half tons and there is the Tundra. Tundra hasn't changed since 2007. About time it does.

Actually, our farm's GMC 2500 is comfortable as well. And the seats are more comfortable. But it is not for me to use as my personal tow vehicle.

I look at the numbers and the companies involved and think that Toyota is more likely to under rate their capacities. That being said it’s up to the individual what they feel comfortable with.

I wouldn’t try to tow a fifth wheel with my tundra but getting to the payload rating or a little over? I wouldn’t be worried

I sure would like to keep it but my horse is important to me. All the good, solid, horse trailers have a big tongue weight. I can get a cheap aluminum frame and aluminum skin horse trailer with an empty tongue weight of 450-500 lbs which will not hold up well in an accident. The payload rating is the only fault. It tows wonderfully otherwise. I have been told I can add airbags, helper springs, etc but that will not change the legal payload limit. I do realize that the GCVWR is the max that can be loaded in the truck and trailer. I was just not sure if that would be the legal limit when I am towing, or if it goes by payload limit only, or both. I'm thinking of "legal" as in if I have an accident, can I be sued. Especially when in the USA. I do travel south to go camping with my horse.
