Quick review and first impressions on the Perry Parts Front Bump Stops (35" - of the Gen 2 / 2.5 TOYOTA Tundra. A long term review, and follow up once I have more miles and time offroad to follow.

    Background

I've gone back and forth, reading everything I could and eventually settled between two EXCELLENT Made in USA products, the Coachbuilder and Perry Perry Parts bump stops. Honestly, I think either would be and are fantastic and back by two great Americans. I did end up with the Perry Parts bump stops on my 2017 TOYOTA Tundra SR5 4x4 (5.7L V8 - Regular) Crew Cab. I spoke with both gentlemen, absolutely stunning customer service, and you can't go wrong with either. Flip a coin for superb service and products. Patrick Perry was amazing and essential in getting a great product generated and to me for my use. I can't say enough nice things about either company. What I did like, was the very tailored height and progressive nature based on the links below. As you'll see in the driving impression, that to me, was truth, NOT marketing. The adaptive compression damping, and variable density really plays out in real world use, highway, and offroad, but what I really liked was the safety (equipment and my family who go offroad with me) as the protection appeared to be outstanding, especially when you compare to the factory in the image below.

    Installation

Removal: I replaced both the front and rear front bump stops at the same time. Stupidly easy and fast. The website was spot on. It took longer to remove the tires/wheels than replace the bump stops. I did find the rear of both sides on the front had a small amount of oxidization and used some anti-corrosion / penetrating fluid to make it easier to remove. My Tongue & Groove pliers aka "Channellock" were just a little to small, I think a 12" - 16" would have been perfect or possibly something like the Bahco 9035 R US Extra Wide Adjustable Wrench or Knipex 8603300SBA 12” pliers wrench. I managed easily enough with a smaller Tongue & Groove but it took a little longer.
Installation: The instructions (hyperlink below) were spot on. I did tighten the rear a little more due to the penetrating oil reducing the friction. I used a Ko-Ken Z-Series / Z-Eal 2725Z-3/8 (L160) ratchet, it's a 3/8 drive in a 1/4 housing along with a Ko-Ken Z-Series / Z-Eal Semi-Deep 6 point (pt) 2300XZ-14 14mm socket. The front is no problem, but the rear bump stops lack clearance and the thinner profile and shorter length of the socket made install amazingly fast. The bump stop was too deep for a shallow socket, and there wasn't room for a deep socket. If you don't have a semi-deep 14mm I would recommend a short/standard 14mm socket and the smallest extension or adapter possible to avoid any delays or frustration pending another low profile solution to make installation easier.

    First Drive Impression

I was blown away at the extra "compliance" the bump stops added and I wish I had done some before and after but the "nose dive" under hard braking, body lean / sway on hard turns all seem to be reduced. Several people hopped in the truck and asked if the shocks had been replaced or a new sway bar installed. Nope. Just the bump stops. Needless to say....Perry Parts has sold some more sets after a few rides. Not only was the "shock / thud and noise" of the factory eliminated, but all the around town small stuff, and slow speed big stuff felt much better. Overall everything just seems "nicer" and more composed, while high speed travel was more comfortable and little more "Cadillac" on the typical SoCAL pot holes and other road trauma. I'm really excited to get my new shocks on and see how these work together with the larger tires I have inbound a complete system. We did do some testing for giggles, and ended up going on, and over lots of obstacles, followed by highway and other things I knew previously would have the Toyota OEM bump stops contact the arms, if the Perry Parts did, it was so progressive / soft that I really couldn't tell - SOLD! It seems like the Perry Parts Bump Stops are a part of the suspension, not just a final stop and I'm extremely impressed.

    CONCLUSION

Couldn't recommend them enough. I'm looking forward to wrapping up my suspension upgrade and figuring out what rear bump stop I need from Perry Parts, because its pretty dang obvious that the factory isn't nearly the performance and looking forward to a full setup by adding the rears. Patrick was kind enough to throw in some great stickers and they're now proudly displayed on my tool box!

    Cheers,
    Jay!

Is your truck stock suspension pretty much? I mostly drive highway and wonder if this would even be for someone like me

I was contemplating adding some front bump stops. Your review pushed me over the edge. It’s at a price point (lower than other options) that an impulse buy was impossible to resist. Thanks!

Also, I found a random discount code “yotasurf” that got me 10% off.

it is - I’ve not received my new wheels (ordered 6 months ago) and waiting to put on the new shocks and UCAS. Straight TRD Toyota OEM

I actually love it on the highway - it has a much more smooth and comfortable ride, and much quieter if the roads are imperfect as the bump stops (OEM) don’t slam in to the arms and with nearly zero compression- opposite of the Perry Parts. I also like the reduced body roll that I perceive - I’ve debated trying to test a before and after with inclinometer / gyro - it could be confirmation bias but I swear the truck at low speeds especially seems to pitch less for sure and under braking definitely.

somewhat frustrating (in a good way) that something so dang inexpensive has made a disproportionate difference, and it didn’t take me more than an hour total. I wish I had upgraded long ago.

+1 on the PerryParts bumpstops. I run the LT versions front and rear, they’re great.
