Hi. New member here, but not new to Tundras. I recently had a return line break in the power steering system, and wound up with a dry running pump for about a minute of two. After I repaired the line, and filled it with new fluid, it was working fine, until I got the truck stuck, and was revving it trying to out of the snowbank. Now the fluid has turned totally black, and I have no power steering (or any steering) at idle.

By running the pump dry for 1 or 2 minutes did I fry it??

Kind of sounds like it. Maybe you can confirm by placing your finger in the reservoir and feeling for suction with the hose to the pump while the truck is running?

I’m sure one of the other members here will chime in with a better idea.

I am not questioning you, I know you wrench a lot. Just asking for my own knowledge. Will you feel that sxn at idle without the steering pump engaged?
I’ve had high pressure lines weeping for almost a year

I’d have to double check myself. I did notice that fluid was flowing in the reservoir while the truck was sitting at idle so I assumed you’d feel some suction coming from the intake to the pump line. I’d check it now, but it’s late here. I may try it tomorrow morning when I have some time.

Yea late and cold here, too. Don’t check and report for my sake. If it’s not in you memory bank don’t sweat it

Just to let you know, once I get the revs up the steering works. But trying to turn city street corners is an iffy thing. :)

Well forget my idea. I took a closer look at the reservoir. You can’t really get your finger in there anyway to check.
