I’m thinking of powder coating my wheels. My concern is scratching the powder coat finish when I change my tires. Does anyone have any experience with this?
    Thank you

A tire tech that knows what he's doing should never touch the wheel with anything that would harm the finish. As long as it is a reputable shop, they should cover any damages that they might cause, just make sure you and the salesman look over the wheels together first, so that the tech can't say it was already like that. To help put your mind at ease, look at all the wheels on the road now that aren't chrome, if it's not chrome, it's more than likely painted with a clear coat, a very small percentage will be powder coated. Powder coat is tougher than paint and thus will hold up better than paint. If the painted wheels are surviving, then powder coated wheels will be even better off. If you are still concerned about the durability of powder coat, I had all the suspension on my Superduty done in illusion purple and when I got rid of the truck, I had put about 20k miles on the suspension and it still looked new, not a chip to be found in it. So if it holds up that well under a truck, that tells you it must be pretty durable stuff.

My wheels are powder coated. Powder coat when done right is more durable than paint. Most shops have tire machines that don't touch the rim.

The PC should be very durable. I went with gloss black knowing that it will scratch a bit and I was OK with that.

As mentioned before, any good tire shop will know how to handle the wheels and mount the tires (upside down) without scratching the face of the wheel.

They are going to scratch a little over time I'm sure, but with proper care/handling they should be fine!

@Borgs is a smart man and did his wheels matte black as the scratches won't show.

The shine was important to me but if it isn't important to you I would go matte.

So far my matter powder coating looks great. I like how I don’t really have to wash the wheels anymore (or wipe them down) because you don’t see any dirt or dust on them.
