The Blind Spot Monitor indicator (BSM) indicator on the outer corner of the right mirror is located outside my field of vision, and I have to turn the head to see it. I regret my former, less cheap, vehicle having these indicators located close to the mirrors, but inside the cabin. Seems what was well designed for a narrower Toyota cars does not well suit a wider truck.

You should still be using your mirrors anyway, so this is an operator error, not a design issue.

Of course, I would not change lane without checking in the mirror.

But, why is this indicator installed, as there are 3 mirrors on the truck? Maybe it is useful to some, in addition to the mirrors, as is very visible, and noticed faster.

When I am driving on busy multilane freeways, it helps me first to select which lane is free, without having to focus in the mirror. And I will then action the signals and then look in the mirror.

It is also useful to double check during the lane change. So, I prefer have the BSM indicator located in my field of vision. And the Toyota’s choice of placing it in outer part of the R mirror not the best.

Someone did a mod, and installed a light inside the cab, on the side of the door right next to the a pillar.

    Are you fucking kidding me?
This can't be a serious post...

How on earth did I change lanes on a multi-lane highway since 1978 without BSM lights on my mirrors?
What kind of spoon-fed "I don't want to have to focus on my mirror" bullshit is this?
Some of you Gen 3 guys are literally helpless.
We are doomed as a society..

I didn't mean changing a lane without looking. I meant that you should be checking your mirrors every 20-30 seconds for general situational awareness. The BSM is supposed to be a minor supplement to an already developed skill. It can be super helpful for telling you what is in a blind spot or when somebody sneaks up on you, because we've all had that happen, but it shouldn't be the first option. It's there to confirm what you have determined through lane and mirror checks, not to be the thing that directs you where to go to start with. I'm not trying to attack you on this, so please don't take offense. I am really just trying to promote good driving habits. To build them I would suggest turning your BSM off for a month of normal driving and honing the basic skills and situational awareness. Then pop it back on and use it as a supplemental tool rather than a key item. BSM systems have been known to fail and give false positive and negative readings, so they should never be taken without confirmation. Trust, but verify.

That said, I always opt for BSM in my vehicles now, but not because of lane changes. I do it for the RCTA that comes with it. That can actually help when it is impossible to see while backing out of a parking space and has saved me from idiots speeding through lots on at least 5 occasions in three different vehicles.

You should listen to her then..

Your mother told me to voice my opinion and call out foolishness.
The OP needs a self-driving car.
Apparently, he can't handle the stress and anxiety of a lane change without BSM in front of his face.
    This thread is utterly ridiculous..

Just to add my 2c. Personally, I only like BSM because it tells me when NOT to change lanes (ie glance over at the mirror, light is illuminated, I know it's not safe to even try switching). I'd never rely on it to tell me the lane was clear; always have to check mirror/blind spot physically, even if the light is off.

Yup. That's the trust but verify bit. They tell you as much in the manuals for the system. It's not a replacement for good driving habits.

I'd suggest left and right BSM indication in a windshield heads-up display.
Then he wouldn't have to turn his head at all to change lanes..

I've been trained for 37 years to check my mirrors every 4-6 seconds.
Perhaps that is why I find this thread so silly.

I understand where you're coming from, but the aggressive tone is unlikely to help in this case. It's like making fun of the fat guy at the gym. Even if you're correct, all it will do is make the fat guy not want to go to the gym. Offering some tips or help would go much further to developing the good habits.

I'm the fat guy that goes to the gym and doesn't care what anyone thinks or says about me.

I can't idly sit down and watch the dumbing down of personal responsibility and common sense of this younger generation.

You keep being the helpful, calm, coddling, PC, everyone gets a trophy good guy, and I'll keep on being me.
No one has to like it, or agree with it, that's the joy of me, being me.

The BSM system in general doesnt make sense to me as, if you have your mirrors properly dialed in, you shouldnt even have a blind spot. You should see the car coming into view of your vision while you are still seeing it in the mirrors. I just cant seem to get my wife to understand this.

My thoughts too. Too many new drivers seem to be relying ONLY on this newer tech. My "18 is the first vehicle I've ever driven with a backup camera but I will never rely solely on that when reversing and I bet there are a group of people(OP included) that literally just stare at the screen and not "turn their head" when reversing and not realize they gotta watch their front corners especially if parked next to other vehicles.

I was able to get my tundra without the sr5 package, which i think is what gives you the BSM, just one more thing to go wrong and cost me money that i wont use. I also love having the physical key.

Same here, I don't have the BSM on mine. Tbh, when I first found I didn't have it, I was a lil bummed but knowing that it could potentially become another expense should it malfunction or what I'm reading is not very reliable, I'm not really missing it. I too don't have push button ignition which for the same reason, I'm happy I don't.

my 21 SR5 doesnt have push button. SR can probably get it if they get the SR5 upgrade package.

 Your guess is as good as mine. So I bought my Tundra used from CarMax with 23k miles on it. I'm learning so much that there's so many different trims and packages, I don't even know what's what especially since I bought mine used. It has just about everything that what I would think a TRD sport should have. Are you saying that push button ignition is standard with TRD Sport? Mine came with both front and rear TRD sway bars, the hood scoop, body already color matched ,even the Sport decal. Could all that have been added on after by the 1st and only owner? I'm looking at spec sheet now and don't see anything that says TRD Sport. Should it? My Tundy could be an imposta

Ahh okay whew. Lol you had me worried for a sec there, went to my door panel to double check I'm inputting the correct VIN on MyToyota website. So my spec sheet does say SR5 under the grade. No BSM and no push start which I'm okay with. I recall another member telling me that BSM is a safety and convenience option that can be added at original purchase I believe.

I actually find BSM distracting, especially at night. I'm trying to get used to it, but I'll probably turn it off, if I can. I haven't looked into it, yet.
