I was in the area for a hunt and couldn't miss the opportunity to drive to the top of Pikes Peak.

I hadn't been in about 30 years and it was time to make the trip.

The crew cab with 6.5' is a little bit sketchy on the switchbacks, but I had no issues with power or braking. I shifted between S1 and S2 on the way down and feathered the brakes when necessary.

    Boom, shortest trip report ever.

300 hectares on single tank of kerosene
How'd it run at the top? Could you notice any difference?

    You just wait
I've been there once, very enjoyable trip. It was in a 2nd gen Tacoma and the loss of power at elevation was very noticable. I'm sure the tundra did wayyy better at elevation.

That's what I was wondering too...

What is it, like 7,000 feet gain in elevation from bottom to top?

I haven't been up pikes peak in about 8 years. I remember driving on it when I was 16 and more than half of it wasn't paved. Mt Evans is a cool drive as well, a little more rustic if I remember and pretty close.

I wasn't getting on it all, so I couldn't tell any difference.

It's absolutely crazy to imagine racing up the hill with a several thousand foot drop one foot off the shoulder. Ken Block was a beast and left behind some awesome footage.

    Very close. 7400' elevation rise.

I worked on the paving project for 3 months installing new electrical primary in the roadway. Feb-April at that elevation sucks ass. I haven't been back up since...and that is where I popped the question to my wife 22 years ago. Only reason she said yes was due to being oxygen starved, it was hailing, and she wanted to get out of the weather.

Right?! If you haven't seen the rest of Ken Block's Gymkhana series (or even if you have) they're worth a watch.

The one in San Francisco is pretty cool.

Super genius! Way to make the elements work in your favor.

I did it at sea level, and used the fairy tale approach of a horse-drawn Princess carriage. They didn't stand a chance!

That is pretty cool too. I like seeing marriages lasting a lifetime. Takes a lot of work, but worth it IMO.

Nice pics. Simply curious question...did you still have hair back then in the first pic? :monocle: Seriously though, very nice pics! 22 years is a long time!

Awwww! Great pics... looks like we both married WAY up. Your wife is lovely.

Yeah, a lot of work but my life is way better with her in it. It helps a lot that Margo and I were friends for years before we ever dated.

I strive to be a better man because of her, and she tells me I'm a good husband. She married her high school sweetheart and he turned out to be a selfish lazy tool, so he set the husband bar pretty low and makes me look real good!

Come to think of it, I should send him a fruit basket or something.

I had a full set of hair. One year after marriage and it started going away. Coincidence? Maybe

So did I. I've been on the mountain during time trials when unfortunate accidents happened.

The reason it was paved was due to a few things:

-Road maintenance. This was just getting way too expensive and hauling end dumps to the top of the peak sucked.
-Electrical outages. Along with the road maintenance, the graders would cut into the primary quite a bit since it was direct bury. Not to mention just having the ground movement cut up the insulation. We would have to thump the line and get a general location of where the fault was. Then haul an excavator up and start digging. This was very costly.
The restaurant/gift shop would freeze up pretty quickly without power. Half of the year getting to the top was almost impossible unless you sent SF.:D
-Safety. Believe it or not, there are way too many people that have no clue how to drive on passes like this. People going way too fast and slide on the gravel and off they would go. In the three months I worked up there 3 or 4 cars went off the side. One death.

That all makes sense... especially the safety part. Though I sorta see it as natural thinning of the herd, I guess you gotta' protect people from themselves to some degree.

We were in Moab last April and it was refreshing / terrifying how many places you can just walk up and stand right on the edge of a thousand foot cliff if you want to. (I know, 'cuz I did it a bunch)

I was amazed that they'll let any idiot in a rental car (Me, for example) drive Schaeffer Trail. (Wifey didn't much care for that one.)

I'm used to CA, the nanny state where there's warnings and guardrails out the wazoo to protect us from things like coffee being HOT.
