Got a quick question, I used the search to see that this was achieved but there wasn’t any info on how - what would be the best way to get the bolt heads to color match the wheel? Just got the Icon Rebounds in satin black and trying to knock this task out before mounting.

I’ve seen two processes: removing and powder coating or masking off the wheel and rattle can spraying. Just seeing what you guys thought about each. Thanks in advance

I’d take the easy way out and just spray them with plastidip, and then go around the bolts with a razor blade before peeling off the excess. If it gets messed up over time, no big deal just do it again.

I have the same wheels and I took out all the bolts, put the stems in a cardboard box, and plasti-dipped the bolt heads. Worked great and they are holding up really well.

If the bolts come out that’s even easier.

Something to think about for color matching...

If you have some 'minor' compulsive tendencies, you'll be looking for perfection in the color matching. However, if you run something more subtle than the stainless bolt look, in let's say a satin bronze (or something similar that goes well w/your vehicle's color scheme) you may avoid seeing any color mismatch and still get the look you are after.

    If I remember correctly it’s a 10mm bolt. I think I did 4 coats of plastidip

I had different wheels but same idea poking bolts I to cardboard. Also, I used spray paint. 1 can was plenty to get a few coats. Let them cure at least 2 days and socket didn't scratch them. I used drop of blue thread lock when I reinstalled the bolts too.

Appreciate the replies, looks like one of those jobs that can be tackled in lots of different ways. I’ve decided to remove the bolts and stick the stems into cardboard, then give them a few coats of satin black paint. First coat on and it’s looking promising.

Without the bolts in at all looks kinda cool too. I saw some black plastic allen head bolts on Ebay. That could be a good option for something that is light weight and the finish might not wear off over time.

Man I have the same wheels and have been thinking about doing that, however, since my wheels are always dirty, I guess the dirt/mud kinda provides a consistent color scheme across the ring and the bolts at least.

Love the truck setup you got! And yeah you’re right, can hardly tell in those pics.

I had a hard time deciding between titanium and satin black, they’re both killer. Ready to install this weekend and see how they look and feel

    Thanks man.

Yea, I am still thinking what would mine looks like if the wheels are black, so I think it will look good either way, I went with titanium because I want some definition in the wheels instead of just all blacked out which IMO makes it harder to tell the line of the spokes.
I am also loving the method 701 or 704 and keep thinking about them lol

Just got them mounted today on 285/75r17 ridge grapplers, looks great and feels even better. Big difference from the 20” wheels!

I know I am resurrecting a very old thread, but I just ordered these wheels and I want to paint the bolts. I think they are just for show, correct? Can I take them off after the tire is mounted to paint them? I ordered the wheels and tires mounted and balanced so I don't have the option to paint them before the tires are mounted.

    Thanks!

Yep you should be good to go, they are just for show. It’s going to take you some time in that position as it took a good amount of time with the tires lying flat — but you know what they say, effort and value are linked. I consider it time well spent if it’s getting you closer to the truck of your dreams.

Side note, 4 years in with this truck and I still smile every time I drive it — long live the 3UR-FE. Best truck ever built.

    Cool. Thanks.

I am doing this on my 2012 Sequoia. It started life as my wife's car driving around the kids. When they got old enough to get themselves around, she got a new sports car and this became my daily for toy hauling and light off road duties in the sand dunes. I got bored of it recently and started looking at other options - Ineos Grenadier, New Sequoia, Land Rover Defender, Chevy Tahoe, etc. None of them got me interested enough to plunk down 70-80K (or more) to, in my opinion, be less capable and less reliable than my Sequoia is, and more importantly, could be with the right mods. Instead of buying a new truck, I stuck in a 10" Android radio that is awesome, I am throwing on some 34's, and then doing some cosmetic mods. Swapping the grill for a TRD one and blacking out all the chrome. I am more excited about this than I would be buying any of those cars and I know I will easily get another 150k miles out of it.
