Hi Everyone, just passing along a upgrade / part number to change out the plastic stock oil filter cap assembly on the 5.7 L Engines. Did some research and Toyota part # 15620-31060 was made for other Toyota's in metal. This is a direct fit to the Tundra 5.7L assembly housing. The only thing is you need to do is swap out the inner oil pick up tube. When you order this part a shorter tube is installed. Release the clips on new tube and put in your longer old tube that is in your current cap. Definitely stronger and no more fear of cracking it. Photo is credited to a purchaser on Amazon I forgot to take one.

Correct, multiple threads about this. Took me 5 minutes on the phone earlier this week to convince an OEM parts seller that this would fit my truck. I made the mistake of entering my VIN with my order, which at times seems to cause more problems than it solves.

Ahh ok, wasn't sure if there was existing threads. I'm a newbie. Yes sometimes the parts department only sees the computer screen and do not listen at times. Been there.

I’m doing my first oil change at 2K miles and debating whether to replace with the metal cap now or at 30K. The dealer will do 10K and 20K oil changes (under Toyota Care) and I’m a bit concerned they’ll see the metal cap as an invitation to torque it to death.

** Would it be a jerk move for me to tape a note to the skid plate, when dropping off at the dealer, requesting that they not overtorque things?

Too often requests are overlooked when they’re only written on the service invoice.

I have left friendly notes in the truck before explaining issues with vehicle or what I need done because I can't be there. I would just write a note saying " I have heard these oil filters caps are hard to get off at times and crack if they are put on too tight, can you just snug it on so I do not have trouble in future" I dunno, any other thoughts......

Thanks for the link. Just ordered one and will put it in on my next oil change. I see other knock-offs, but really prefer to spend the few dollars for OEM.

Don’t even let them touch it, I skipped my free oil changes and just did it myself. Should’ve should’ve gotten some cash back for it but oh well.

^^^^ This. There are plenty of threads on here describing bad outcomes from such a simple service. Remember, the guy doing the oil change is likely the lowest on the totem pole/pay scale and it's often reflected in the expertise and effort put into the job.

I've done every oil change on my truck and plan to continue to. The platsic housing is perfectly fine. I can see wanting a metal one if you do have shops work on your truck since they tend to over tighten things but if you're doing it yourself you wont have an issue, i guess unless you also tend to tighten things too.

You’re probably right, it isn’t completely necessary. But I do intend to keep this truck for a while and heat, oil and plastic can become an issue. It’s peace of mind, mainly. For about $35, it’s worth it to me to have a Toyota made casting doing an extremely important job.

    Not enough....
Same here. I do all my own maintenance, but I still swapped out for the metal housing and torque it to the correct spec. Sure the old housing may have never caused me any issues, but it is cheap piece of mind. I have spent $35 is far worse ways before lol. I just always think back to how easily, and quickly, I've lost even small amounts of money gambling, and it helps justify every useful purchase I ever make!

OP, lots of us who’ve been around here for a few years know about these, but we now have hordes of new truck owners who would probably never turn this up in a routine search. So hats off to you!

I looked up threads on changing oil as a new Tundra owner and ran across these metal housings. I considered them an extravagance.... until I spent :20 trying to remove an over-torqued plastic housing and thought it was going to fracture as I tried with might to back it off. This was after the 2nd dealership service.

It did come off, but I immediately ordered the metal housing.

I let the dealership do the 10k changes and I usually try to do it myself at the 5k intervals.

Is it necessary to slightly bend the little tabs up to allow you to turn the inner tube to remove it...and then bend them back down after you install it?

I’m planning on replacing the plastic caps on both my ‘21 Tundra and ‘19 Avalon XSE....which has a shorter filter, so I don’t believe I need to swap out the inner tube.

yes, you have to bend the tabs to remove and place in new one and bend them back down, I just used a flathead screwdriver. Just be super easy with them as it's really thin sheetmetal.

Hi, yes you have to bend those little tabs up and then back down. Also ensure the spring and other piece that sits under the spring that helps release oil from canister gets seated back in properly. I actually removed the tube from the new metal cap first so I would.know how much force was needed to lift tabs. I also figured if I broke them it didn't matter because that tube was too short anyway. I used a heavier pick to lift tabs. Easy peavey. Good luck with the upgrade. Cheers

It’s really not complicated, once you get the new cap, study it, and practice on that before you remove the tube from the plastic one. Once you see how it works, it’s pretty self-explanatory.

Can the inner tube be ordered separate? I just know I'll be standing there with a mangled tube and a truck without oil or a filter in it until I can get a new tube !

I don't know, but you don't even have to bend the tabs. It's on a spring I believe, so just push down and twist it clockwise or counterclockwise, and it'll come right out. I did not have to bend any tabs when I swapped mine out.

What's the recommended torque for the plastic cap and would the metal one be torqued to the same spec?

    Drain plug bolt: 30 ft/lbs
    Filter housing: 18 ft/lbs
    Filter drain plug: 9 ft/lbs

I did all the same torque specs when I switched to the metal cap. Haven't had any issues. I think I saw online the metal filter housing is 18-22 ft/lbs technically according to Toyota. So call it 20 ft/lbs and call it a day. Or, just snug lol
