I have a 2012 limited crew max 4x4 with a 5.7 with 191k on it. I am currently in TX working and finding that I have to idol to cool down and get out of the sun. My engine says 0W-20 oil. Would it hurt to put 0W-30 or maybe 0W-40 in it to help maintain good protection when I am at an idol for a time?

use the recommended oil. The 30w will not hurt anything but I can't see it gaining you anything either

I'd go with an extended service, high-mileage, full-synthetic in 0-30 or 5-30 in Tejas. I like mobil 1 but most any brand all the way 'down' to wally marts full synth high mileage will do just fine. What OCI do you go with?

See link below. Scroll down to MAINTENANCE DATA, Oil System. You will see the following:

    Recommended engine oil SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30

    https://www.engine-specs.net/toyota/3ur-fe.html

For Texas temperatures, you won't need 0W for starting, and 20 or 30 viscosity will be better for higher operating temperatures. I just changed my 4.6L over to 5W30 Mobil 1 Extended Performance. In the USA, the 0W20 is for fleet fuel efficiency (CAFE). In Mexico and other hot countries, 5W30, 10W30 oils are recommended for the UR engines.

I don’t have an issue going with slightly higher viscosity in the Summer heat. I wouldn’t overdo it, or try to outthink the engineers. I’d stop at 5w-30, then a lower number for the TX Winter. It’s also mostly splitting hairs in what one perceives is better.

I want to thank y'all for the info. When dealership changes my oil they told me nothing but 0W-20. But that seems very thin in the heat and would break down quicker. I think next oil change I will do some 5W-30. Thanks to all again.
