Well, I decided to change my synthetic oil and filter on my new Tundra at 4600 miles instead of the recommended 10K. It was an easy job and I'm glad I did. I know it most likely did not break down due to it being synthetic, but I'm from the old school and just don't like the idea of waiting that long. I drive it only for pleasure and have towed a light trailer 3 times since purchasing it last summer. I wanted to share a couple of pictures with you. Would you really want to wait until 10K to change your oil?

I go five. I also have a FFV engine so it calls for that. I tow a boat quite a bit so I’ll be sticking with five.

5k here as well just had mine done last week. I thought our 10k service was a lot of mileage until my uncle told me some BMW’s do 15k oil change intervals

5k here. I only hve to change mine about once a year. 100 miles or less a week. 10k would definitely be to long.

I used to have a BMW 3 series and can vouch that oil change interval was once a year or every 15k. And the oil did not look too bad. However, it was 8 quarts of synthetic Mobil 1 for a 3.0liter engine, so I think a lot of oil helps.

With the tundra, I’m at 5k oil change intervals because we tow a travel trailer a couple thousand miles a year and my wife drives it very short distances to and from work (I don’t think the engine warms up and runs long enough to burn off any moisture).

With my Dodge Durango, I do 10k with full synthetic.

I too change at 5K. However, my oil looked nothing like the OP. Mine was still like thin honey. There was also no signs of metal on the filter pleats.

Kind of cool scientifically. Not junk science. I average around 10.25 K miles per year. Two M-1 changes per year. I'll stick with my two 5K changes but if Mobile-1 Annual is legit..a once a year oil change at 10K would be nice.

What about the oil filters? Are they made to go 10K miles? I wouldn't be able to sleep either. :D

I did my first one at 5k, ran the second 10k And the oil looked good when I changed. I'm back at 5k because my intervals were messed up by the cam tower repair. With today's synthetics I don't think 10k is far fetched.

10k is fine with me. Color doesn't have much to do with the life left in the oil. Get is tested at Blackstone labs to find out for yourself.

Yeah, oil color is somewhat of a myth now because many oils have additives that discolor it. If dark to black though.....not usually a good thing. (High heat). I think Blackstone only charges about $30. I want to find out more info on the Mobile-1 Annual.

I'm old school when it comes to oil changes because I own several older air-cooled (actually air/oil cooled) cars and motorcycles, so I typically run Brad Penn 20/50 Racing oil in them due to the high zinc content. We're talking factory recommended oil changes at 2500 miles on some of them, however, with additional cooling and filtration modifications, that interval can be stretched out a little more.

    I also have a '96 Tacoma V6 with 126k miles and an '02 Tundra V8 with 65k miles. I run Mobil-1 synth in both.

I 'accidentally' went 15k without an oil change in the Tacoma a few years ago and due to still recovering from a major surgery, took it to the dealership for an oil change instead of doing it myself. Knowing that the oil hadn't been changed for that period, I asked my service advisor if the level was low, (answer: no) and how the oil looked and felt. He said it looked, felt and smelled fine.

Bob has a brand new truck with a brand new motor. If I remember correctly, it takes 10~15k to totally break in new piston rings under normal driving conditions, so blackish oil for the first several oil changes is not uncommon. The oil in my Toyotas still looks good when I change it at 10k, and I run both of them hard at times. I had a TRD supercharger on the Tacoma from 25k~80k and hauled two~three Harleys in an enclosed trailer often. I removed the S/C when I bought the Tundra to gain back a couple of MPG ... otherwise, that thing ran like a bat out of hell :mudding:

if you don't hit 20k in a year, get the Mobil1 extended performance instead. it's rated for 1yr/15k and a LOT cheaper.

I ran 7500 mile intervals on my last Tundra with Mobil1 or Pennzoil, and everything was fine. I had 2 blackstone reports done over the years and both came back great.

I'm at 5K now with M-1. I'll check today to see if anyone has the M-1 Extended on sale. I use my local Grease Monkey and always supply my own oil. They do a great job and I can still save a few $.

Hi folks, new to the forum, just bought a 2018 CrewMax SR5 last week and been reading a lot on this awesome forum. Just wanted to pass along that I have been doing extended oil changes since around 2000. Started with the synthetic 5000 mile change when 3000 was the standard, then when m1 extended came out I moved to the 15,000 or once a year and haven’t looked back. When I was younger I kept the vehicles a lot longer and most were run in excess of 150,000 miles before selling them. I will be moving to the 20,000 or once of year next. I have never had an issue, not one. My wife’s 08 Scion xB has 160,000 miles and I run it the same. My last two cars before the tundra was an 2015 Tacoma 60,000 Miles then sold and a 2016 4Runner 40,000 Miles then sold for the tundra and both were changed at the 10,000 under the free oil changes and then m1 when that was done and neither had an issue. I don’t tow or anything, just family cars.

I've run up to 10k for my first two. Planning to do an analysis with this next change, will report back.
