Just got my 2022 Tundra about a week ago and so far I’m loving it. I’ve been lurking on the threads reading potential first year issues I may have. I was wondering what your opinions were regarding oil catch cans for the turbo engine? I seen Ford Ecoboost owners install catch cans and wondered if there would be a benefit to adding it later. This is the first boosted engine I’ve had so I’m trying to learn the ins and outs. I’ve loved this forum over the years and thanks for any input. C9C31F1C-E240-401D-BBAB-28179742E4EB.jpg

My advice would be check your intercooler and throttle body for blow-by BEFORE buying parts to modify your PCV. Learn from my experience and avoid trying to fix a problem that you may not actually have.

Catch cans are good for direct injection and boosted vehicles. If it’s a daily driver (which most are) then regular maintenance will actually suffice. They are best for preventing air from mixing with the oil. It also helps prevent blow by from any extra gases and of course it filters some of the extra trash as well. Basically if you can justify the extra cost, some are really expensive, then go for it. I do regular maintenance and it’s a street queen that doesn’t work hard. So it’s not on my top priority list right now.

I would really consider it. Since your motor is DI & Port Injection it only makes sense.

@shawn.roe24, care to show your catch can pics?

My Duramax boost tubes were coated nicely with oil. After tearing my truck apart I seen the need for either a catch can or re-routing to atmosphere.

This was after 650miles of no towing.

I absolutely think they are worth the $200 bucks.

That is from a GMC sierra 3500. The new gas 6.6L. It is Direct Injection so I went ahead with a PCV reroute to catch can. If the engine has direct injection I would do two things.
    1. I would use high quality oils with dispersants and detergents to help keep things clean. I settled on Amsoil
    2. I would install a catch can to remove soot and water that the engine oil can't clean
This will help keep the re-used gases more pure for re-burning. I think the new tundra has both port and direct. So I think a catch can is work it.

And sorry I just read the thread. I was tagged for pictures so that's what I provided :rofl:I see you have a different story. Do you think PCV reroute isn't necessary or other things should be addressed first?

For sure! Mine engine is only direct injection. I will be honest I know very little about the new engine in the tundra. If there was ever a manufacturer you could trust it would be Toyota. Sometimes for cost reasons manufacturers put in really good parts/designs, but the buyer has to add somethings to make it the best. Auxiallary Transmission cooler is a perfect example

Thank you all for the insight. I plan on changing the oil and filter at 1000 miles and then at every 5000 intervals to keep things clean; not every 10,000 like the manual recommends. I may add a catch can later. Only time will tell.

That’s interesting. I’ll have to try to find where that is. Will you elaborate?

It’s call the “intake” tubes.

That's great to hear that the 3.5 TT is dual port, smart move on their part. Carbons a huge issue on DI and the MPI helps out a lot on that front.

Tundra has DI & Port injection, meaning there is no use for a separate oil catch can because the gasoline sprays over the intake valves preventing them from carbon'ing up. The PCV blows any vapor with debris back over the intake tubes to be cleaned by port injectors.

Thanks for that explanation. That’s good to know and makes me lean towards not needing a catch can.

Very glad they went this route.

Does the LS500 3.5TT also use DI and MPI? Curious if they decided to add MPI after seeing carbon coking issues on the earlier 3.5.

Dual injection as well on the LS 500. Drove mine until 70k miles with no issues.

    Cash can period!$$$$
Moisture,blow-by,vapors are re-introduced to the intake and gets burned up in the normal combustion cycle vs being vented to the atmosphere! That cash can is naturally colder than anything coming out of the pvc system so it tends to condensate thus you being fooled.

And do you take the contents in that little can to a recycling center???
    That's what I thought!
