I have the oem premium audio package but what exactly makes it premium? Brand (is it JBL? I don’t see it marked anywhere)? Number of speakers? Where do I look to find these premium upgrades? E.g. there is a small speaker near the door handle in the rear seats. Where else? I think it sounds plenty decent. I have 2021 SR5 TRDOR 4x4.

Is that an additional 8 speakers? So how many total? Where is the subwoofer located? I have what looks to be a speaker in the middle of dash, is that another speaker?

Search premium audio in the stereo forum, you should get quite a few hits with more details. 8 speakers total I think, could be 9 with center speaker on dash, and then a woofer/amp under seat.

My 2020 Limited Crewmax has the "Premium Audio" system. It's not JBL and has 9 speakers, 3 in dash, 1 in each front door, 2 in each rear door. There is no subwoofer, and there is a separate amplifier under the front passenger seat that powers the 4 door woofers. I think the "Premium" is just a step above the very basic system.

If your happy with the sound that's great! Save your money for something else.

For 2021 there are 3 levels of system. Built in amp (amp in radio like most older vehicles), Non-JBL amp (aka premium) and JBL amp ("top of the line"). I also have a 2021 TRD OR so I'm very familiar with the speakers/locations. The system has two amps, one in the head unit, and one below the passenger seat. Wiring goes from the head unit to the dash corners, and then on to the center speaker. Wiring also goes from the head unit directly to the rear tweeters, for a total of 4 amped channels coming from the head unit (dash left, dash right (which combine in center), rear left tweeter, and rear right tweeter). The head unit also sends a non-amped signal to the amp under the passenger seat, which then amps the signal and sends it to the 4 door speakers. You do not have a sub unless you have the JBL system, which is denoted by the JBL logos throughout the truck.

In the base model/work truck, the head unit powers all the speakers. In the JBL trucks, the JBL amp powers all the speakers.

Can look at the full wiring diagrams here: All Years Complete Audio System Wiring Diagrams | Toyota Tundra Forum

And a simplified wiring diagram of what's described above looks like this:

Really appreciate it! No plans to upgrade I just geek out on details so I was more curious about the system and you helped tie it all together. Thank you!!

Hey Snert, for the “premium audio” (non JBL) do you happen to know how many watts the head unit is pushing to the tweeters? And amp to the woofers? It seems to be around 15 I keep seeing.
Also, where in the system is the crossover taking place for the 9 speakers?

The dash corners are 6ohm 13w wired in parallel to each side of the dual voice coil center which is 10w + 10w and 8 ohms each voice coil. 10w + 13w = 23w and 6 ohm + 8 ohm = 3.4 ohm total impedance, with resistance call it ~4 ohms and 20w, which just so happens to be exactly what the rear tweeters specs are, 4 ohm 20w. The 6x9’s in the front door and 6.5’s in the rear door are all 2 ohm 35w. As far as crossover, not sure tbh but I’d guess in the head unit, but the dash corners and center do have inline crossovers aka capacitors wired onto each so idk if the head units sending out full signal and those are just doing bass blocking/high pass or if there’s additional crossover eq going on from the head unit, or if it’s just capacitors on the drivers directly wired to the head unit and then low pass filter in the amp.

In my 2020 premium (non jbl) I can say with absolute certainty, the signal to the dash speakers is full range. I ran R&L speaker wires from the center dash speaker to a mono amp and subwoofer. Works perfect and sounds great.
