Putting an aftermarket rear bumper on and finding some unexpected stuff. Where the hitch mounts to the frame brackets, there are four bolts on each side, three the same bolt diameter and one larger bolt diameter at the top - all take a 19mm socket. On both the driver and passenger sides, the larger bolt has stripped threads from the factory that look like the photo after being removed. Question is, does anybody know the larger bolt fastener specs? I’d get replacement bolts from Toyota, but I’d prefer to order new ones about 1/4” - 1/2” longer to get a full bite on the threads (and help accommodate the thickness of the new bumper bracketing).

Can you cut off the stripped portion and then go match it up at home depot?

Here is a drawing from the bumper manufacturer with their bracket, but the blue circle is the bolt I’m after:

I think it will thread okay, but the new bracket needs those last threads, in no rush for the truck and was just wanting to sit on my butt and order them.

Also, if you’re under your truck in the near future… I found one of three similar diameter bolts on the driver’s side untorqued.

Well guys… I’ll take @WaterTrash’s advice just finish my bacon and eggs and go down to my local country Ace Hardware store. They need the business anyway. You can betchoass I’m checking the mounting bolts on the extension arms of the hitch mount, though.

I AN AN IDIOT! I have a metric tap set sitting right in my toolbox. Size mystery solved. Great tip for automotive work in general, @FrenchToasty - forgot this one!

What was the size? My local hardware store didn't have anything that big so I ended up buying two from toyota for like $6 each.

Will report back. My tap and die set was too small, so I ended up going into town.

Out of luck today. Looking like I got close with an M16 x 1.5 pitch thread at Ace, but their bolt selections were too long for this application. Dealer says Toyota is fond of 1.25 pitch threads. I’ll go to a specialty fastener store this upcoming week when they’re open and get it all straightened out. Sorry for the delay, @helidave

Hey guys, finally got to the bolt store. Bolt is M16 x 1.5. I got replacements ~1/4” longer. Still $4.50 a piece, so maybe the dealer wasn’t totally gig’ing you, @helidave.

    Let’s Go Brandon!

Just to clarify the thread, these are the single bolts on each side at the top as shown on the diagram - the other three mounting bolts are M14 x 1.5, I think.

I’ll put them in tonight once I get past my honey-do list for the day I took on vacation. Y’all know how that goes…
