I’m interested in potentially purchasing the OEM dash cam as I’m not sure I want to mess with any internal components on the truck and like the idea of it being plug and play. Did some googling and didn’t find much in the way of recent discussion around this and had a couple questions:

    1) Does anyone have any longer term reviews of the OEM dash cam or thoughts on its performance?

    2) Is there a part number or link to spark parts/BAMwholesale that you can post?

    Thanks for your help!

I'm just going to go out and say it, go with an aftermarket in order to get better quality and higher bitrate recordings. It only takes one hit and run at night to lose out on the poor quality and then having to fork out the insurance deductible against your own insurance. The OEM one is limited to 1080p and only has a starvis 1 image sensor. The standard is quickly becoming the STARVIS 2 sensor at 4k. I went with the A229 Pro by VIOFO which is 4k in the front and 2k in the rear with a starvis 2 image sensor. I installed it using fuse taps and the hardwire kit offered by VIOFO.

I didn’t spend the money to just swap out stuff.
Yes we have a thread all about the oem dashcam and its perceived value.

Try the search function.....there has to be a half dozen threads on dash cams. One was less than 2 weeks ago

Ive seen a few of them, but was specifically curious about the OEM camera. Most folks are going with a 3rd party so it’s been semi-difficult to find posts on it.

I'm curious... There are so many cameras on the tundra that practically cover every sq in. I wish there was an after market raspberry pi unit of some sort that can tap into all the cameras and provide round-the-clock recording like a Tesla.

    Wouldn't that be nice?

I just installed the OEM dashcam and while I had no issues installing it and it appears to be working fine (I’ve also formatted the micro SD and received no errors, etc.), after every drive it says “No Files” when I check for videos in the app. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong? I have a micro SD reader coming tomorrow to check it on my laptop. Thanks for your help.

The oem camera only records events as they happen and it only stores them at default for 3 days. Supposedly it will record a few seconds before and after it senses motion. You have to use its app and save files and download them in the same format and play them via the app. If you didn't get the camera with the truck when you bought it then I would get an aftermarket one.

I have one of these, really like it. It has front cam, rear cam, plus interior cam that you can turn to your left, in case of a traffic stop, road rage incident, etc. I plan to buy another to put on our truck. Viofo seems to have a good rep in dash cams. I have no association with the company, just a satisfied customer.

I purchased one at wholesale cost, and still feel like I overpaid. Yes, it is a decent camera, but you can get one similar for a lot less money. I am a big fan of the Garmin cams, and bought a mini for around $100 for my wife’s Outback, and it seems just as good. If you must have the OEM and have the extra money to spend, then go for it. Like I said, it’s a decent enough camera and integrates well with the factory plug and play. Just concentrate on properly using the template and properly adhering the base. The one thing that really makes me nervous with the OEM is a windshield replacement. The Garmins include an extra mag mount, so that would be easy. I’m not sure the OEM base could be salvaged for a windshield replacement. I may be completely wrong about that though.

Mine came with the factory one (bought used). Haven’t played with it yet, hopefully there is a YouTube video out there showing how to operate the damn thing.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the replies. Yes, I’m not impressed yet. I might need to return it - thankfully I got it at wholesale cost. Mine literally isn’t even saving a single file - even when I depress the red button to activate a recording.

I'd go non-oem for a dash cam - the one in the Tundra's not great. It only does about a 120* swath in front of the vehicle. Go with a 2 or 3 camera setup for full cabin, and park mode 24 hr recording ... My truck was broken into this weekend... smashed the passenger front window and tried to break into my console safe... after rummaging thru the truck... all I got were 2 1 minute videos of the front of the truck looking at the parking lot at 2:57AM ... and didn't see who was in the truck... or anyone outside it at that point in time... it did wake up from the bump and breakage. but that's it. The video is useless. The perpetrators didn't stand in front of the truck to let it take their picture....

I've only used my OEM camera briefly when I first got the truck (dealer installed option). When the green power light is on it should be recording video, even if you're sitting still the camera should be recording when it has power. It breaks up the footage into 2 or 3 min files so after 5 min you should have a couple of files stored. I haven't ever pulled the SD card and tried to use it on a PC but everything worked fine when using the phone App with the camera. And a tip: If you try and download a movie file it's pretty slow. Unless you actually need a copy it's much faster to just stream (play) the movie on the phone as then it starts right away and you don't have to wait for the download time.
