Odd thing with my keys…

Two different keys, one with black plastic bumper, the other without it…

the one with the bumper opens and locks the drivers door, the flat top one only unlocks the door…?

The flat top key won’t lock the doors. But if I open the door and throw the latch switch they lock… and I can lock and unlock both sides from the passenger side. If I use the bumper top, no problem either side locking or unlocking…

Passenger side has no issues with either key.

it’s my understanding that neither key has a micro chip… At least not like a GMC chipped key does anyway…

Thoughts????

 

Is it maybe a valet key? Valet keys usually don't allow unlocking of the glove box or trunk/tailgate. Either that or someone made a copy and it wasn't cut very well.

 

I’ve had similar issues with all my older / higher mileage Toyotas as the keys wear. If you can get ahold of the key code, a locksmith can cut you new keys from that, and it just might work perfectly in all locks.

I’ve also had good success just having a worn key duplicated, nice square edges seem to make the difference.

 

If you show proof of ownership and your locks haven't been changed Toyota will cut you a key for around $15 with just the VIN

 

The bumper key works as it should, the flat top key does not. Seems like the flat top key is either worn out or was originally cut poorly (or a combination of both). I'd just get a couple of duplicates made at the hardware store from the bumper key. If that doesn't work, then reach out to a locksmith or the dealer.

I had the same thing from my 2004. The no bumper key was a hardware store cut by previous owner and only unlocked doors. I wasn't aware they had a valet key or valet "cut" or it was just a crappy cut. Anyway, I just used that one in my old hide-a-key box.

 

Yep, only Sequoia and some double cabs use chip keys in the 1st Gen world. I'm guessing old key. Roll up to a dealer and get a new OEM key cut based on your VIN.

 

Same here. I have two bumper keys with two fobs (take that 3rd gen!) and one plain key. The plain key only unlocks the doors.
