Has anyone been watching or following OceanGate? What’s everyone’s thoughts on that missing submersible with the billionaires on it?

Honestly, I think they're gone...The knocking is probably the ocean crushing what is left.

Super crazy. I take it that it’s too late as far as oxygen supply as of 6AM today? And that’s assuming it didn’t get crushed and/or sink to the bottom.

They’ve been gone for a couple of days. Hypothermia and co2 poisoning got them long before oxygen ran out. Sad situation but that’s the risk you take doing stuff like that.

Seriously. If your dumb as falls down into the gorge at Zoar valley and have to be rescued, you get a bill for $10k. If you die, your family gets the bill.
These people weren't traveling to the bottom of the ocean to benefit humanity somehow. It was a joy ride. Completely unnecessary. This shouldn't be on the tax payers to flip the bill for a few billionaires that were just fucking around in the ocean.

NYT piece is Behind a paywall if you've over-shot your free click quota but this info is dropping everywhere.

Sounds like an all around un-serious company run by people with their head in the clouds that was so eager to make headlines and collect checks they couldn't be bothered with appropriate engineering and safety standards for the risk level of these ventures.

All kinds of things could be said about the passengers' decisions but it sounds like the company deserves to be bankrupted And gutted by lawsuits.

And any others doing this work should
Face some hard questions. Apparently governments can try to tell average people what cars they can drive and what types of appliances to cook with but they don't pay much attention to companies that glue mini submarines together and then sell rich people trips to the bottom of the ocean In them. Now that we are all paying a Search and rescue mission bill maybe it's time.

Well I’m sure “back in the day” people thought taking a heavy metal structure and getting it airborne was crazy and wasteful. And think of all the failed attempts…

Pretty sure that if I was a billionaire I could find something a helluva lot safer to blow $250k on. Besides, being a billionaire, I'd likely have my own submersible just for the hell of it. It would be attached to my yacht like a Bond villain. Still, this sucks for the families of all involved.

It does. And I'll bet every one of their family members said, "I don't think this is such a good idea."

Just looking at it and not being a submarine expert I would never even go into a swimming pool with that poverty small submarine. Lol.

Ya but this is a heavily explored ship. This isn’t the first time a sub has visited this part of the world. The engineering has been done and tested. This company was just negligent all the way around.

Every time I hear about this, I get this sinking feeling. It feels sub par on a pretty deep level. Then I mentally high-five the Titanic for continuing to kill rich people over a hundred years after it sunk.

Now looking at a debris field. I know one of the warnings I read they got awhile back is the hull wasn't built thick enough, I wonder if that's about to come into play.

I was going to mention this earlier today when the report started playing on the news, I told a co-worker yesterday the knocking was probably the air tanks releasing pressure and being crushed a little at a time, since the submersible probably imploded. I'm at work, so I don't really have a choice on what to watch, can't be watching ridiculousness and cackling while people walk by.

I watched a video from an ex navy submariner that said the sub had been tested to 3000m, not the 3800m the titanic sits at. My 1st thought was hull failure and implosion.

Then they said how it was controlled, and my second guess is they are sitting on the bottom with zero way to control it.

Oh...it's worse than that. The game controller was wireless, and from some reports, a knockoff that only interfaced with older versions of windows.

If I had to go, I'd prefer the implosion in 1/100th of a second, over suffocating.

Sounds like based on what they are reporting now..it imploded. They found what they believe is the "debris field".

At that depth, what happens to a human body if the subs comes apart? Immediately crushed to death? Seems better than slowly suffocating and having to be stuck in a tube for 4 days.

    Basically pink mist.

Here's an account of a diving bell accident that happened on a drilling rig. Operating depth of the rig is stated at 1500ft so I'm guessing the bell was pressurized for no more than that depth. The OceanGate sub was headed for 12,000ft.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byford_Dolphin

Medical investigations were carried out on the remains of the four divers. The most notable finding was the presence of large amounts of fat in large arteries and veins and in the cardiac chambers, as well as intravascular fat in organs, especially the liver.[3]: 97, 101  This fat was unlikely to be embolic, but must have precipitated from the blood in situ.[3]: 101  The autopsy suggested that rapid bubble formation in the blood denatured the lipoprotein complexes, rendering the lipids insoluble.[3]: 101  The blood of the three divers left intact inside the chambers likely boiled instantly, stopping their circulation.[3]: 101  The fourth diver was dismembered and mutilated by the blast forcing him out through the partially blocked doorway and would have died instantly.[3]: 95, 100–101

Coward, Lucas, and Bergersen were exposed to the effects of explosive decompression and died in the positions indicated by the diagram. Investigation by forensic pathologists determined that Hellevik, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient and in the process of moving to secure the inner door, was forced through the crescent-shaped opening measuring 60 centimetres (24 in) long created by the jammed interior trunk door. With the escaping air and pressure, it included bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in fragmentation of his body, followed by expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine, and of the thoracic spine. These were projected some distance, one section being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door.[3]: 95
