I’m also keeping mine on. Seems perfect no issues with “blowing off” even at 85MPH. Has anyone seen any reports of where the issue lies, videos of it happening, weak points etc? Very happy with my stock OEM tonneau.

I wasn't going to take mine off but had to haul last weekend and didn't put back on. Not really sure why though as I always keep it closed and can't see how it could fly off as hard as it latches at the joints.

I dont see how it can come off in the folded state. The side rails are self tapped screws 6 times on each side, the cover is bolted to the side rails with locking washers and nuts plus latching into it 3 times on each side into the side rails. Mirror is probably held on weaker !

I was at a dealer today dropping off my daughter to pick up her Venza and one of the sales guys walks out and said it was recalled and needed to remove it. I just said no chance thats happening and thats where the conversation stopped.

I just keep and eye on it, make sure the nuts stay tight., and drive with it in the closed position

Yeah I took my truck in yesterday and he said "we have been instructed to take cover off and lay it flat in bed" I finally convinced him to leave it on after going back and forth about it a couple times but he made me sign off that I declined the removal.

Likewise, mine is staying on until I get the fix or until Toyota buys it back. I wrote them a letter about 2 weeks ago, still waiting to hear back. Meanwhile I have no intention of getting near a dealer since I do my own oil changes.

I had my Tundra in for a 6 month service yesterday. They did the recall on the tonneau cover according to their paperwork. The funny thing is I have a DiamondBack Cover?? I am not too sure what they would have done to fix my cover. Fortunately, they didn't charge me for the recall!

In your case the recall was to merely check to see if you had an offending Toyota cover. You don't so they signed you off the list is all.

The tonneau cover recall ONLY affects the OEM cover. If you have any other cover besides the OEM cover, you are unaffected.

You also are not required to take the cover off. They will just make you sign a release saying that if your OEM cover flies off, you were warned that it could happen and Toyota will not be responsible for you ignoring a safety recall.

No one will force you to take the cover off, they will not take it away. Not sure why yall are getting so angry about this...

Spraynard will assistify. Lettuce go to the white board (scribble, squeak):

    - 0W-20 CAFE oil for north america whilst the hottentots of the third world get to run heavier grades which offer vastly superior protection.

    - air-to-liquid transmission cooler delete beginning with the 2019 model year leaving us with a hot puck and torque converter temps in the 260°F realm.

    - poor vendor performance resulting in waste gate issues during the 2022 model year rollout.

    - poor quality assurance practice resulting in poor weatherstripping and platinum trim placement.

    - poor quality assurance practice resulting in big end bearings spontaneously readjusting their clearance during operation.

    The list is not exhaustive.

I was talking specifically about the tonneau cover recall...

but yeah i get the rest of your grievances. A new design of any vehicle is gonna have issues, which are being worked on, resolved, and fixes pushed to consumers. The way some of the people on this forum talk makes it seem like all I do at work is create a problem on the truck while cackling and then go play golf while the end user gets frustrated. I assure you we're working extra hours to track down and fix all of the issues.

Had my truck at the dealer today for service. No mention of taking tonneau cover off. I have toyota cover on, that was installed by dealer when bought my truck.

We really appreciate it. It's just that this experience where consumers are really Beta testers seems very un-Toyota like. But we'll get past all this eventually. And I am mostly very happy with my truck.

But still, the way Toyota is handling the tonneau cover issue is unacceptable, IMO. They should buy these POS's back immediately. I am going on a road trip in 2 weeks and I need that cover. So, it stays on. And if it flies off, it flies off. And yes, I have and will continue to check it over. But again, since Toyota won't tell us what the problem is, it is anyone's guess... and you'll see plenty of them here... as to what actually needs to be checked. A more absurd situation I can't even imagine.

I am going in today for 10k service. On the phone they already said they want to take my tonneau cover off. I told them no. I will sign whatever they make me to keep it on.

Why not just add some tethers to the rear mounting brackets that attach the cover the the lower tie down points in the bed? Problem solved.

Hey, yes, we could run a few wraps of duct tape under the bed and around and over the cover. Just have to avoid the drive shaft. LOL.

    Lots of stuff!
Bungie cords to the fenders and the bumper in a tic tac toe pattern and a 2x4 lengthwise into the back window. Don't forget to put the 2x4 under the bungees to keep it from flying off at 85 mph.

I prefer "safety yellow" bungie cords but the black ones will work too! Sort of like this picture but but add the 2x4 and go up and over the tonneau cover.
