Yeah no. Unless Toyota brings a 3/4 ton to the market, it’s not happening. I wouldn’t want to share the road with anyone trying to tow that much with a half ton truck

Tundradude sources have been correct many times like no pro for the 18 models. Now nothing else is said about it so maybe there will be a 3/4 ton version who knows

If there is a 3/4 ton version then that’s awesome, but no way in hell a half ton will ever be rated at that

I am hoping that is what that means because Toyota wants to be the big company in Safety and reliability.

Would be really interesting if it was a half ton though we already have 1 tons like the Ram 3500 for example towing above 30,000 pounds which I never would have thought possible ten years ago and there are already people wondering when the first 1 ton will hit 40k max tow.

2020 GMC 3500HD has the king spot of 35500 lbs, which is ridiculous, and requires a Class A CDL.

The 4th gen Tundra better be pretty beefed up in the brake department (may not need it due to the nature of electric motors and variable vain turbo), frame will need some serious upgrades from the cab back, rear axle should be a full floater but I doubt it will be. Payload will have to be a min of 2400 lbs (18000x10%=1800 lbs). At the current setup I have with a 1 ton diesel, 13000 lb is all I can conventionally tow. With a GN hitch it’s like 23k lbs. Even if Toyota starts offering integrated GN hitches, the payload rating will have to be 3420 lbs (18000x19%=3420).
Should be interesting to see how a truck can pull 18k and have a max hitch weight of 1500 lbs weight distributed, which in this case, would be around 8.5% tongue weight. That would be scary in my book.

This was 17K lbs, and included my truck rear axle, and both trailer axles. I had no problem towing it up some pretty good grades, but I also never got above 50 mph in the city.461740DF-9A0C-4C14-A8CE-6543E59297EA.jpg

Damn the big three are already at 35.5k lol guess 40k is around the corner. Guess we will have to find out how Toyota plans on doing this when they give a press release or autoshow reveal.

The 30 mpg will probably be the unloaded fuel economy figure though.

I hope they beef up the other parts as Chris said or the real world towing will be the same. TBH I'd be more happy with better payload.

I am sure they will after finding out from @ColoradoTJ that the highest rated 1 ton is at 35,500 pounds of towing capacity it doesn't surprise me anymore that a half ton will be at 18k in 2021. I grow worrisome considering some of the drivers on the road though.

I think Toyota knows how big the truck the full size truck market is here in the states and they want the top spot. They have the technology to do it. I would love for it to happen and see the fear it puts in the big 3 to get on the ball.

yep bank account is running low from it..
This sounds like the next test in Toyota moving toward more heavy truck... I will assume that if this is correct Toyota is eyeing f250 and 2500 series trucks in the next gen tundras...

Smart move Toyota going this route and not using the POS Cummins engine...

They’ll never get the top spot with all the fleet sales from the big 3. Their top spots are the mid size truck and whatever the rav4 segment is. It’s just time for a redesign in general as the tundra is going on it’s 14th model year for 2020. I would love to see a 3/4 ton size tundra though

They aren't looking for the top spot in total sales, they are looking at being #1 in certain abilities.

Cool news. Can't wait to see the real deal. Not too shocking with towing capability but crazy in the 90's 12 to 13000 was a big deal with 1 ton's.
