Newbie here, looking for help. We picked up a real nice 1st gen 2000 Tundra 4x4 with a 4.7, 283k miles runs and drives out great, but seems to be using an alarming amount of oil. No spots in driveway, records show oil was changed 500 miles ago, but is already a quart and a half low. Is this normal for a high mile 4.7 V8? I have other Toyota vans and cars with higher miles but none are using oil like this. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think that’s common in many high mileage vehicles. My buddy runs Liqui Moli (high mileage lube) in his 200k+ Sequoia and it runs much better and burns less.

Welcome! Is it possible whoever did the oil change didn’t fill to max? Does the service record show the amount used and if the filter was replaced? Fill her up and see if the oil level continues to drop.

I'm guessing they never checked it. Manual calls for 6.5 quarts but mine takes 7 with a stock filter.

Welcome Tom. Some oil consumption is not uncommon or something to be overly concerned about. How much is the motor consuming? If it's consuming a couple of qts or more every 1,000 miles I would be concerned. If it's less than that, I wouldn't necessarily be concerned depending on the conditions the vehicle is driven under. You could do a dry compression test and then a wet one and verify what the differences are, if any, then go from there. That's what I would do if it were consuming abnormal amounts of oil. If it wasn't, I would just drive it as I always had and check the oil at every fill-up and top-off as necessary.

Did you verify the level when you got the truck? If not, how do you know if it was correctly filled when last changed. My go to with new to me vehicles, is to do a basic service, or oil and filter at the very least so you have a known baseline. Then you know. Good luck going forward.
I'll just add this: when I bought a new car in 2012, It had 4 miles on the ODO, before I left the lot, I checked the oil level to make sure it was at the proper level. Cause, you never know without checking.

Mine does not use oil. 10k miles between oil changes, never leaves the top mark. I would take the above suggestion and top off and monitor consumption. Even then, another oil change with the verified right oil and filter would be the final test to make sure the right weight
