Hey all, recently bought my new 2021 crew cab tundra. Absolutely loving it!...I had a question in regard to the fuel economy average..everywhere I’ve ready ppl are getting 15-18mpg.

my truck so far is only getting around 11 average. It has around 200 miles on it, is this something that will get better and average out the more I drive since it’s so new? That’s kind of my thoughts but any past experiences is appreciated!

    cheers

city you're looking from as low as 9 to high as 14
Highway you would be looking at 16s to low LOW 20s

And only 200 miles I bet have been fun miles with v8 acceleration tests...that's why...but it should get a bit better with more miles, an oil change, and more highway driving...now never talk about fuel mileage again if you own a Tundra...muscle takes energy to use!

I’m getting around 16 average in my ‘21 with ~1500 miles. I do feel like it went up after about 500 miles. The real average killer for me is idling, so I avoid it as much as I can.

I’ll chime with a friendly note that there are a gazillion threads on MPGs here. You should do some searching - but there are a lot of variables that play into MPGs. Depending on your location it might be due to winter blend or any of dozens of other variables.

Idling KILLS MPG for sure...they're meant to warm up when you drive em...they're no longer like the 80s-90s truck that had thick dining oil...

I have a 2017, and I get 15-20 highway miles and about 15 in the city or rural area. 101000+ miles on it. Comfortable on the highway.

Be sure to reset the MPG setting after you fill up. It should get after sometime, we average around 16-17, lifted on 34s.

I've completely stopped looking at mine and don't care how bad it is or how OK it is on some days.

If you bought a Tundra for good mpg, you made a huge mistake. There is nothing you can do to make it better.

Biggest thing I’ve noticed on mpg threads is some tell the truth and for whatever reason some like to embellish their mpgs. I get anywhere from 11-16 day in and day out.

V8s suck gas when idling. My MPGs improved quite a bit during break in. A service writer at the dealer told me when I hot first oil change that he has seen them get better up to 10k

@Dustbuster did they finally update the Bullydog for the 20/21's?

Another owner of a new one here. Depends mostly on where you drive. On the freeway I can get "20" for long stretches of road, with some spikes of 30. First light I come to that all gets erased. First tank was 16 MPG, next one was 14 MPG.

The tundra is a heavy vehicle with an old skool engine. At least you don't have to suffer through endless "start stop" cycles or other ECO crap! LOL

I have a '13 CrewMax with 102k on it....I get anywhere from 13 to 16 mpg. If you're concerned about fuel economy.....perhaps the Tundra is not the truck for you. There is no substitute for horsepower

What is MPG, is that some kind of mod you can do to a full size truck?

I seem to remember mine changing drastically when it was still breaking in. FYI—manual says no high revving for 500 miles and no towing for 1000 or something. Check my memory on the numbers. And change your oil at 500 miles for peace of mind.

I fully agree. Best thing you can do is get over it. But don't say that in the 1st Gen forum. Some of those guys are sensitive about their mpg threads. :D

08 double cab 4x4 with 4.7l getting 13.5mpg in town consistently with 500lbs of sandbags in the bed. Hoping to see 15mpg or so when the truck takes less time to reach temp and fuel switches to summer blend and I take the weight out of the bed.

It's the same in every forum, just like the shooting ones where everyone has 0.07" groups with off hand pistol at 1200 yards and 340mph wind that day.

200 miles isn't near enough to determine average mpg. Give it a couple tanks. Also do the calculations by hand at the pump, not by the dash. Those things aren't super accurate.

As others have said, many factors come into play with what affects mpg.

Lastly, Please do a search for MPG. You'll get every answer you've ever wanted. Plus more. and More.

    Enjoy your new Tundra!

I have found mpg numbers between the computer and hand calculating to vary. The first time I compared filled the tank at station by my home and drove 165 miles north to the lake for a weekend. Made one short trip, maybe 10 miles (next day) then next day drove home dat after that.

When I got back went to the same station, same pump and filled the tank. Much to my surprise both the truck and my calculations said 18.9 mpg.

Next time I made a comparison was a full tank of fuel that was spread out over probably maybe 3 weeks and many short trips around town, (I'm retired and don't commute) although I don't remember the numbers there was a couple mpg difference between the truck and my calculation.

I don't hand calculate mpg often but it seems to me that the trucks figures may be more accurate if done with few start stop cycles involved.
