    None...yet.
Hey guys, I just joined the Tundra club with a brand-new '21 Limited TRD-OR in Cement. First new car, 5 miles on her off the lot. The truck is amazing! So amazing that the first thing I did was hop in and make the 400-mile round trip to my girlfriend's and back this weekend.

I knew about the break-in period, and tried to vary speeds between 65 and 80mph, didn't brake hard or bring it even close to redline. It was mostly highway miles, maybe 10% city.

Once I got home I had the good sense to look into the break-in period it further, and it seems like "no highway driving" is mentioned quite frequently, citing long spans at one RPM can cause uneven wear on the engine. So my question is: How badly did I mess up? Really my RPMs did vary throughout the highway miles, the adaptive cruise and I-55 construction zones helped with that. Just...not by more than a few hundred RPMs for a lot of those miles.

Welcome aboard from NW Oregon, Tom!
You did absolutely no damage to the engine and drive train. If you had spent the entire time towing a 8,000lb trailer uphill at 70mph, you might have done some damage.
Enjoy your new truck and congratulations!

Add me to the list of probably no harm done. I would do your first break in oil change at 1000 miles, then follow with the schedule you decide on. Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

You’re good like everyone else says.... as long as you don’t beat the crap out of it and load it down and put undue stress the motor and trans will be fine. Plus it’s the 5.7L it’s bulletproof haha enjoy your new truck !!!!! Hope you have many more trips with it

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! I drove 5 hours home after picking up my truck new, on cruise control. The biggest thing is to allow your engine to warm up some when you crank it after several hours sitting. I let mine idle for 20-30 seconds minimum.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input! If for nothing more than peace of mind, I think I will change oil out after the 1k mark just to be safe. I'm curious what a Blackstone analysis would say about a sample of that!

I am in the habit of letting my vehicles warm up from my diesel days, a little idling at startup is nothing new to me!

I bought mine 200 miles from home, then jumped on the interstate home. Almost 50,000 miles later no issues.

I wouldn't call what you did "damaging", but maybe additional wear.

The engine is dyno'd before installation, so it's probably ok that you varied speed and what not.

The reason for break in periods is to wear in the gear sets and limit the high temps that can be had from long drives when new. I have had quite a few new vehicles and never really paid much attention to break in periods except three vehicles:

    -1999 TRD Tacoma
    -2012 Corvette
    -2016 GMC 3500

My current truck is the GMC and I paid close attention to the break in period and glad I did. Break in requirements was:

-First 500 miles, no speeds above 55 mph and no long distance trips (whatever that means).
-First 500 miles of towing after initial break in was limit speed to 50 mph and stop every hour or so.

During the initial break in my differential temps could get over 220*F and the hottest I seen with the thermal gun was 234*F, which surprised me a little bit. During the tow break in, the temps were a little lower since but I also never went over 50 mph or 30 min of towing (around 8500 lbs). After about 4000 miles my gear oil temps are never but 50-60*F over ambient and still to this day with double the towed weight. When I stop after towing, the thermal gun is used on the rear diff, tires, bearings and brake rotors to monitor temps.

Just did the exact same type of trip the weekend after picking up my 21 cement limited ha. Glad to hear no harm was done and I also never heard of that type of driving harming the break in period.

I bought mine out of state and drove it 400 miles home. I think the whole break-in period recommendation is more than a little unnecessary these days. Congrats on the new truck!

welcome! If it puts things into perspective any I'd venture to say 99% of all reciprocating engines are put into service and used as intended from day one.....construction equipment, lawnmowers, mopeds, pressure washers, and every dang rental and fleet unit on earth. We obsess over the little things that can (maybe) make it technically 1% better. I only wish I had a good trip like that conveniently when I bought a new truck so I didn't have to do all the short trips I typically have to take living life during the "break in" I allow in the first day or two.

I really appreciate the replies, guys! For those of you who have done something similar with theirs when new, are you experiencing any oil consumption?

Nice to hear the positive responses. My truck's production date was two days ago. Hoping to take delivery before I have to take a 600ish mile trip to Georgia. Was excited to take a road trip in my new truck, but now I'm worried about the break in. What would you guys do if the manual says "Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods" for the first 1000 miles, but had to take a long trip?

Had a buddy in high school jump his brand new off the lot Jeep about 30 feet thru the air and bent both front fender on landing.

So you could have done much worse.

As the others say you're likely fine.

Vary your speed and RPMs using manual shifting. A pain but can be done on the highway.

Well, welcome from Idaho, as a Commiefornia transplant.

Sorry to give you the bad news, you've completely ruined your truck. Soon you will be having lots of trouble and it'll start burning oil. Trust me, you want to get rid of it now, while its still has value.

It just so happens that I like to buy up ruined Tundras and save their owners from a complete loss of value. You could lose it all, but I can help you.

Contact me by PM, I can give you $25K cash so you can make a down payment on another truck. Then I'll part it out to make my money back.

Whew. You are lucky I saw this thread.

    LOL

    It'll be just fine.
