    Welcome aboard!

Congrats on the Diesel Hybrid! :). Have you thought about getting a black truck?

Check to see if your air filters are blocked or something is in the air stream?? If it is new, maybe they got something in the air flow path. Or the air filters are still wrapped in shipping plastic. I am sure they can figure it out with a quick scope.

I am sure that this Tundra wont meet any EPA or environmental requirements.

Hey PBNB, thanks for your reply. I actually had that same thought, but no blockage or visible findings. Dealer already had it for a week, and states toyota is denying it because "there no codes". Very frustrating

Wow, that sucks, My tailpipe interior is spotless and it is a 22 model limited non-hybrid. Could there have been some mix up in the fuel? Or contamination? Perhaps it needs to burn up the fuel and get some fresh high test?

Soot usually means over-fuelling at least in the diesel world and/or some of my earlier over-carburated vehicles.

Does it give off a particular smell when running?

Are you sure it's black smoke? Have you actually seen the smoke?

I ask because I've noticed my truck get's abnormally dirty in that location, too. But, in my case, it's condensation in the exhaust that creates a film of moisture that collects dust and road grime.

Take it back and talk to the service manager if that is soot and not road grime. You don’t need a code, they’re just being lazy. Either one of the cats failed or something is making it run rich(faulty o2 sensor, fuel injector, spark plug, etc)

edit: just saw your review that you already spoke with the manager. Time for a new dealership

That is not normal by any stretch! ^^^^^ Dealer service dept needs to do their job. God forbid they have to exercise the brain a bit and actually put forth some effort!:)

@Matt2015Tundra that's a good point. I have seen some of that road de-icer make a mess.

That does bring up another concern. Why the dealership didn't just wash it can call it good? :) If they had it for a week and ran diagnostics, and checked it out.

Does this soot appear inside the tailpipes?

What octane are you using and do you only go to one gas station?

yup, I take them apart for what we do at work, you would not believe the amount of crap in gas and in the piping and tanks when we pull them out. Shitty stations that don't replace filters often enough etc can really do some damage, not to mention water in the fuel.

guys go in an shovel all the shit out of the tanks there is so much, most people don't realize that.

Watch out for those slow pumps or pumps with gum/dirt around the base or fittings, vapor leak here we come, dirt in dirt out.

My 24 TRD PRO does the exact same thing!! My truck is covered in black film at the tailpipe just like yours. I'm running 89 octane ethanol free fuel. Maybe I should switch to the 10% ethanol blend? Wonder if that would burn cleaner?

    It’s a truck, not a show piece.

Pretty common with direct injected engines. Seen it on pretty much all of them. So, yes its normal.

That's part of the reason some car makers use fake exhaust "outlets" in the bumpers now.

I didn't say it was a show piece. I just wanted to know if it was normal? But thanks for your incredibly irrelevant comment.

FWIW, I've also noticed on my Tundra ALOT of condensation in the morning in the same area....I am wondering in your case if perhaps you've driven on a dusty road that now is just collecting the dust there because its wet......I would spray the other side of the bed with water from a spray bottle, mist the area down before driving, and see if the other side looks the same. If it does, then its obviously from dust.

This is normal. It’s not black smoke. It’s condensation and the grime is sticking to it. I have the same issue. My 18’ Tundra did the exact same thing. You really notice it on White.
