Hi y'all, first post here but longtime follower. I was just told by a transmission shop that my 2001 needs a new transmission. Apparently the forward clutches are welded together and the truck will not go in reverse, also wants to go forward in neutral. Has anyone experienced this issue?

With that being said, anyone know where I can get a used transmission that would work with my 2001 4.7 V8 4wd? Located in Montana.

    Appreciate all the feedback!

Until then I'd be curious if the fluid on level ground looks good at the dipstick (note there is a HOT and COLD level to check on your truck IIRC), and if it's burnt or smells foul.

Thanks for the reply! I did forget to add an important part. One morning the transmission hose clamp came disconnected. The hose leaked a bunch of tranny fluid. I replaced the hose clamp and added in tranny fluid making sure it was the right amount. It took a lot of fluid. I drove it probably half a mile with little to no fluid before I noticed. Maybe why the clutches are welded?

If you end up needing a replacement, I recommend using car-part dot com to search junkyards near you.

You’ll want to read through the A340 transmission thread. Not all A340 transmissions are equal. Not that one is better than the other, but not all are compatible. You may need to swap valve bodies, filters, pans. That kind of thing.

Rebuild kits are available along with units directly from Toyota. Although, the Toyota cost was crazy high and I had difficulties finding a transmission shop that was willing to rebuild mine based on its age and mileage. That’s why I ended up going with a replacement.
