Hello all, thanks for the add. I wanted to ask for some advice. I have a 2016 trd crew max with 26k. It’s not my daily. Whole checking under my truck a few days ago I noticed the rear diff had a little fluid around it. Took it into the dealer and found the seal to be going bad. The dealer replaced under powertrain warranty. I typically tow my 3000lb ski boat. I always tow in tow haul mode. After towing my boat today for about any hour I decided to check and make sure the seal held. It did and diff way dry. Although I noticed the diff to be pretty hot to the touch. My question is this normal for towing, especially a pretty good load? Thanks in advance and looking forward to being a member.

Rear differentials will get hot when you drive a while.I would be sure to check the fluid to be sure it is full.

I don't know the answer to your question, you may want to post in the towing section.

    Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Yes it’s normal for the rear to get hot, especially when towing. Obviously there is a point where it could be getting too hot but it’s probably normal. As recommended earlier, check fluid level for piece of mind.

Yup. We don't notice usually because there isn't a temp gauge on the rears. Running at or above 150° is normal. Especially when towing

If you ever notice rains and you drive your truck, the rear end "stump"is always dry.that is because it gets hot. It is normal.
