New member here. I own a 2012 black Toyota Tundra Double Cab that is pretty basic. 2WD (I know, I know) that I've driven for the past 10 years. It's relatively low mileage for a 2012 (120,000) and no mods have ever been done to it other than spraying a bed liner when purchased, adding step rails and slightly larger tires. Was used for typical "dad" work- daily driver to work (when I used to go into an office), moving or hauling stuff around, periodical loads of topsoil, mulch, etc in the back and trips loaded down to the ballpark for baseball. Only trouble I've ever had with it is the power loss issue several years back that Toyota fixed under warranty.

It's now going to become my 16 year old's vehicle and I'd like to spruce it up to give it a bit more of a cool factor while not breaking the bank since the truck is now older. First order of business probably needs to be wheels (maybe wheels and tires), not sure about a lift and then looking for other suggestions... maybe front and rear bumper? Paint matched grill to get rid of the chrome?

    Welcome to any ideas? Thanks!!

Take whatever budget you'd use to spruce it up and get your 16 year old a beater they can use as a bumper car for a couple years first. They are new and they will hit stuff, get hit, make poor choices. Don't let them wreck out a million mile capable rig that's worth decent money. Let it be their graduation gift if they don't eff up too badly.

    Post some pictures.

Wheels and tires are the biggest bang for your buck.

I should have been more detailed... the past year it's been driven by my 16 year old (who is 17 now) and yes he has hit a few things. We've hit a buddy's mailbox and cracked the front grill and scratched the front bumper. Then there was a school parking lot incident and dented up the passenger side rear back panel alongside the bed. So... yes it has a few scars and I'm repairing the rear body panel in December (teenager is paying a small portion from his summer job and I'll fund the rest). I also forgot one other mod... when he began driving the truck at 16 we replaced the original stereo with a unit that allowed for plug-in Apple Car play with a screen and a retro-fitted backup camera (that already doesn't work).

I also have a 15 year old freshman in high school who will be driving next year. The thought process currently is that my now 17 year old will take my wife's 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee off to college (he did earn a scholarship), my now 15 year old will inherit the truck and I suppose my wife will get something else. This keeps my truck at home where I still borrow it from time to time for needs (I ended up in a Tahoe instead of another truck).

So... yes, it's seen some scars. In terms of "finding a beater"; have you looked at used car prices lately?? There is NOTHING I could go buy that I would pay hard earned cash for rather than have them drive my truck. I mean an 10+ year old Tacoma with 200,000+ miles still fetches over $15k. I do sometimes wish the 16 yr old had something slightly smaller to drive in (like the Tacoma) rather than the Tundra but I just don't see why I'd buy another old vehicle when I already have one I know and trust.

Welcome and greetings from Minnesota. I told my oldest son that I would give him my old 1969 Chevelle upon high school graduation IF he got straight “A’s” all the way through high school. He’s had it almost 20 years now. I still miss that car… but it was worth it.

Adding to my original thread but decided on some new wheels (Moto Metal 9070) and radio. Next is Rough Country Bullbar and a badkup camera.
